Kevin Cogan Obituary

Kevin J. Cogan, loving husband of Maureen (nee Smith) for 52 years, adored father of Kevin (Corrie), Peter and Katie, and much-loved grandpa of Emma, Abby and Lily. Beloved brother of five siblings: Edward (Beth) deceased, Jack (Joanne) deceased, Patricia, Lynn Curran (Greg) and Ann Thvedt. He was fond brother-in-law of Thomas (Virginia) Smith and Donald (Debby). Kind and loving Uncle to many, especially Terri Smith Drummond, a nurse who cared for Uncle Kevin throughout much of his illness.

Kevin was born on the Southeast side of Chicago to Edward and Evelyn Cogan and grew up loving Rainbow Beach where he played handball until he was 75. He belonged to St. Bride's Parish and attended Mount Carmel High School (1958). Kevin graduated from St. Joseph College (1962) and received his MBA from DePaul University (1970). Upon graduation from St. Joe's, Kevin immediately joined the Marines and was proud to serve in the Marine Reserves for six years.

He worked in the mortgage industry, launching his career at Uptown Federal Savings & Loan, then later establishing Home Express Mortgage in Lincoln Park. Kevin was the "go to" guy for many who sought to buy their first and subsequent homes. He always experienced a real satisfaction in helping his clients make likely their most important investment. He never needed to advertise-referrals of friends and family came from happy clients. His genuine kindness and integrity were recognized by all-colleagues and clients--who did business with him.

He and Maureen were devoted to each other and became active members of Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Parish after they moved to Glenview in 2001. Kevin loved poetry and read special poems for gatherings for his family and friends. He and daughter, Katie, religiously watched the Chicago Cubs through thick and thin. He was also devoted to perfecting his afternoon napping techniques and pouring over the Wall Street Journal every day of his adult life. He loved fishing with his sons, and proudly watched his three granddaughters develop into lovely young women. He looked forward to poker nights with his high school buddies and was the first one to chuckle at his own corny jokes. Most importantly, he had a genuine sweetness about him throughout his life that drew everyone to him. His beloved family and numerous friends will greatly miss this very special person. Visitation Sunday 2:00 to 6:00 p.m. at Simkins Funeral Home 6251 Dempster St. Morton Grove. Family and friends will meet Monday at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church 1775 Grove St. Glenview for a visitation from 9:15 a.m. until time of Mass at 10 a.m. To livestream Mass go to https://player.vimeo.com/video/663168775?h=9ed3ac7a06 Cremation private.
