Khushi Chugh Obituary

Khushi Ram Chugh, age 87, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family on April 24, 2022, from pancreatic cancer.

Born in 1934 in Shorkot, pre-partition India, he was the son of the late Narain Das and Mathra Devi Chugh and brother of Shanti Devi (Jagan Nath) Pruthi and Harnam Das (Om Kumari) Choudhry. A retired civil structural engineer, he immigrated to the United States in 1964 to complete his bachelor's degree in 1965 at the University of Michigan – Ann Arbor. With his young family, he then settled in the Chicago area, where he thrived personally and professionally with a close network of family, friends, and community. His calm demeanor, positive nature, courage, and grace were guiding principles throughout his life.

He is survived by his darling wife of nearly 60 years, Raj Kumari Chugh (nee Wadhwa), son Rakesh (Sonia) of Mokena, Illinois, daughter Rashmi (Sandeep Mehta) of Bloomingdale, Illinois, and beloved granddaughters Priya of Seattle, Washington and Puja of Chicago, Illinois.

Khushi's family is grateful for the love, prayers, and support from family and friends, near and far. At Khushi's request, there will be no funeral or memorial service. Per his desire and the family's request, please consider a donation to a charity of your choice in lieu of flowers. Om Shanti.

Quotation: "Real Richness is when we are so expensive that no one can buy our character. " Mr Chugh was so truly rich.
My dad´s advice to me was, "Whenever you need help, go to Mr Chugh, the genuine honest man." And yes I did and yes my dad was right. Thank you very much Bhaisaab. I am confident that my dad, my husband, and Bhaisaab will continue to bless me from Heaven. Om Shanti.

My dearest friend. I will always remember so many fond moments from 1964 our college days at university of Michigan to conversations just a few days before he went to heaven which he earned with his compassion and help to friends, family and even total strangers. He will always be in my heart.

Uncle KR as we siblings used to talk about him was more of a friend than an Uncle. I have fond memories of visiting him and our grandmother during our summer vacation and getting pampered with children's book and other gifts.

While in the Unites States he actively participated in community affairs and temple activities in Chicago.

He helped me settle down in Australia and lent me a few thousand dollars to overcome the settling pangs in a new country.

During his visits he made sure to catch up with everyone and took pains to visit his friends and relatives wherever they were in India. I can't forget when he came to visit me in Durgapur, West Bengal in seventies and took me to Calcutta to spend a day or so with the family.

He would always call us or send us birthday greetings.

When he went to the US he sacrificed his family life for better future of his family. Rocky was almost a year old when Uncle KR went to the US to pursue higher studies leaving his mother, wife and an infant son under the care of his brother Harnam.

He had such a lovely smile and I hardly ever saw him loose his cool. He was gem of a person.

Uncle KR loved photography and captured his visits to India in photographs. These photographs would now be invaluable. I think he was the first person in the family to own a camera.

The other thing I remember most is that he had a sweet tooth and loved desserts.

He was such an amazing person and a great company.

He faced his end and sickness bravely and courageously and called each of us (siblings) to say goodbye last week on 18th April 2022 a week before he passed away. With his passing away I feel a void in my life.

He was a great person and a great soul. Let us celebrate his life by adopting what he stood for and carry forward the good work he did for the community. Let us imbibe the values that were dear to him to make this world a better place.

May our hearts be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together as we celebrate a life well lived. OM Shanti!
