Lee Keating Obituary

Lee B. Keating, age 66 of Northfield passed away peacefully, August 28, 2014, at home, after a courageous battle with ALS. Beloved husband of Lucie S. Keating. Loving father of Joshua L. Keating, Jaime A. Keating, Sarah K. Oates, and Thomas M. Keating. Cherished grandfather of Avery J. Klco and Lucie E. Oates. Proud father-in-law of TK Oates and soon to be father-in-law of Tom's fiancée, Erin Matson. Lee was predeceased by his parents Bonnie & Edward Keating and his brother Arthur E. Keating. Leo, a precious friend to many, was a charming man who loved his friends and family dearly. Lee's career spanned from automobiles to restaurants to real estate. Interests included vintage car racing and a passion for golf. His greatest strength was his relationships with family and friends and even strangers. Let him be remembered by his kindness, love and humor and not by his illness. A mentor to many, Leo was a great gift to our world. He will be greatly missed. A Celebration of his life will be held at 1:00pm on Saturday, September 6th, 2014 at Northfield Community Church, 400 Wagner Road, Northfield, IL 60093, with a reception to follow. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Les Turner ALS Foundation, 5550 Touhy Avenue, Suite 302, Skokie, IL 60077 or Massachusetts General Hospital Cure ALS Fund, MGH Development Office, 100 Cambridge Street, Suite 1310, Boston, MA 02114, Attn: Shawn Fitzgibbons. Lucy, I just heard. I hope you remember my working for you both at American Joe's and Pomodoro so long ago. I definitely recall that time fondly. I'm terribly sorry for your loss. Having lost my father to ALS, I can painfully relate to your experience. Be well.

Nancy and I were saddened to learn, from our mutual neighbors Up North, of Lee's struggle with ALS when we finally got up to Crystal Lake in August. Now our heartfelt condolences go out to Lucie and all of the family. Lee's presence in our summer community was always warm, friendly and interesting. We will really miss visiting with him in summers, but hope to see Lucie there next year.

Leo was our youngest and coolest uncle when we were kids - we were fascinated by his music and his mustache! As we grew older, he was the business advisor, always a step ahead of us. In more recent years, he and Lucie were tremendous loving support for us after we lost our parents. It's common to say the world will be a lesser place with his passing, but it's so true in this case. Leo is leaving a big hole in our family. What a great loss, but what a wonderful person to have in our lives while we did.

I too became acquainted with Lee through his loving father, Ed Keating. I remember Lee as a man with an acerbic wit, who was completely devoted to his wife and his family. That devotion was reciprocated; how fortunate he was in that. Life is so unfair and arbitrary sometime: Lee did not deserve to be taken down by that hideous disease. But he and his family lovingly and courageously faced it together; what a model they are for the rest of us. Godspeed, Lee

I have so many many memories of Lee through my long association with his father, Ed Keating. What always struck me about Lee (besides his wicked sense of humor) was his total devotion to his wife, Lucie, and their four wonderful children. He was truly the epitome of a "family man". I hope you are "flying free" Lee.

Leo was and will always be one of my dearest, oldest, closest and best friends.

His lose is heartbreaking to me, we shared so many memories as we grew older together and shared so many stages in our lives. What he leaves us is an example of a life well-lived and a life guided by love for his family and the people around him. He was defined by his ability and willingness to give to those people around him. He was a great steward and guide for his beloved children and grandchildren who I know he adored with every fiber of his being.

I will miss his laughter, his intellect and the physical ability to "be with him", but he will live on in my heart.

In the busy lives we lived, we would yearly (sometimes twice) get together alone out at Fox Lake Country Club and spend some "quality
time" as old buddies catching up on our lives. I will truly remember and value those long days together talking about life, love and our children. Or we would catch a quick lunch or breakfast together. But line he always gave his time to people.

Dearest Leo, you are and will be missed, but I know you are in a very special place and when my time comes to join you, I ask that you have a guitar handy and a set of golf clubs so I can sit down and play the new songs I've written for you and then go play a few rounds together.

God speed and God bless you and your beloved family.

Your Friend,

Chester
