Leon Diamond Obituary

The psychiatrist Dr. Leon Diamond passed away on June 22, 2022 at 98 at The Clare in Chicago. Born in Brooklyn, NY, he was the son of Harry and Hattie Diamond. Joining the U.S. Navy during WWII, he received his MD in 1946 at age 22 from the Univ. of Louisville. After his internship, he went to Red Jacket, WV, as a doctor for a coal company. He described this as a life changing adventure. In addition to his private practice in Chicago, he was a leader in medical education. He joined Michael Reese Hospital Dept. of Psychiatry in 1958, later becoming Chief of Adult Hospital Psychiatry. Joining the faculty of Northwestern Univ. Medical School in 1969, he was Head of Psychiatry at Evanston Hospital. In 1974, he became Director of Graduate Education in Psychiatry at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. He retired in 1991 and became a dynamite duplicate bridge player. He was a profound listener, guide, and sage to his family and friends. He is survived by: son Douglas (Elizabeth) of Chicago, two grandchildren and two great grandchildren; son Mark, grandchildren Morgan and Lauren; son Jason (Amy), granddaughters Tess, Jillian and Chloe of Milwaukee. He was predeceased by his parents and brother, Dr. Bernard Diamond. You may make gifts in his memory to the U. S. Holocaust Memorial Museum and Planned Parenthood.
