Lois Gartner Obituary

Lois Ellen McQueen Gartner, 88, long-time resident of Glen Ellyn, died on May 19 of Parkinson's disease. A native of Park Ridge, IL, Lois graduated from DePauw University and worked as a copywriter for Montgomery Ward's in Chicago, where she met her late husband, Joe Gartner. After the birth of their children – Lisa, Bryan and Andy - Lois and Joe became driving forces in a movement to establish support services in the western suburbs for children with disabilities. Later, they continued their work which provided homes for small groups of developmentally challenged adults and later evolved into a scholarship program. Lois earned a Master's degree in special education from NIU and had a 20-year career as a teacher and school administrator. Summers off created the opportunity for travel, where she and Joe were frequently accompanied by various friends. She made it to all continents except Antarctica. After 57 years in Glen Ellyn, Lois moved to Beacon Hill in Lombard, an independent living community. The family is thankful for the caretakers who helped Lois as her Parkinson's progressed, providing therapy and comfort along the way. Lois was preceded in death by her husband, W. Joseph Gartner, son Andrew Gartner and beloved grandson Joe Gartner. She is survived by Lisa (Jane), Bryan (Maureen), grandchildren Doug and Rebecca Gartner, nephew Rick McQueen (Mary) and many cherished, long-time friends. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, June 30 at 11 am at the First Congregational Church of Glen Ellyn, followed by a reception at Ki's Restaurant. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the Multiple Myeloma Research Foundation or Oak-Leyden Developmental Services.

I acknowledge being rather late in discovering that Lois has passed. I worked as a school psychologist alongside Lois in her various capacities with Indian Prairie School District 204. Besides her being a person of great integrity and capability, Lois always provided bright, optimistic light to her work with others. She was truly and inspiration to work with.

Dear Lisa, Bryan, Maureen, Douglas and Rebecca,

I just listened to Lois's nice obituary. It was well written and informative. I want to extend my sincerest sympathy.

Randy, Janet, Edward and John Snively were long-time neighbors and fellow church members of Joe's and Lois's. We lived in the same Glen Ellyn neighborhood, just around the corner from one another.

Back in November, 2008 Randy, Janet and I got together with lois for a nice lunch at Kys restaurant. Following the lunch we went back to Lois's house and she served a nice dessert.

Last fall I was back in Elmhurst to attend my 40th class reunion at Elmhurst College. While in the area I got together with Lou and Lynda Hoornbeek. They and I went out for dinner at the Greek Islands Restaurant in Lombard. They picked me up on Sunday morning and took me to Glen Ellyn for the First Congregational Church service. After the service Lou and I had a nice lunch at Danby's Restaurant on Roosevelt Road. Then we stopped at Beacon Hill and visited Lois and Lisa. They were glad to see us.

Sincerely yours,

Ken & Ellie Craig
