Luke Laidley Obituary

Born on September 14, 1979, Luke Graham Laidley was the fifth of six kids to Forrest and Diane Laidley of Libertyville, IL. Raised in the northern suburbs of Chicago, Luke was an avid athlete and grounded himself in faith as a graduate of Carmel Catholic High School in Mundelein and Boston College where the tenant philosophy was to serve as men and women for others.

After graduating from Boston College with a degree in Finance, he took his first job at 21 years old with Morgan Stanley in New York City. Morgan Stanley was the largest tenant in Tower 2 of the World Trade Center. His second day on the job was September 11, 2001. As a survivor of the 61st floor of Tower 2, he later wrote, "I encourage all of us to count our blessings each and every day. Give of yourself and expect nothing in return. And become part of something that is greater than yourself."

After 9/11 he moved back to Chicago, where Luke had a successful career in finance. He was a high school football coach at both Carmel Catholic and Loyola Academy, but his proudest accomplishment was his marriage with his wife Lauren (nee Damico). Happily married for nearly 10 years, and blessed parents of Lucas (7) ,Vivian (5), and Logan (3). His true passion in life was being a devoted husband and a loving father. Luke and his family moved to Winnetka, and joined the Catholic parish Faith Hope and Charity, where they are active parishioners and where their 3 children attend school.

A true family man to his core, not only with his own wife and kids, but an incredible brother to his 5 siblings, inlaws, and uncle to 17 nieces and nephews. His smile lit up the room. He exuded positivity and perseverance with everything he did. He loved deeply and truly with all his heart.

Luke lived his life guided by his experiences and he had several that allowed him to bestow compassion, love, inspiration, and leadership to others. He lived a hero's song.

Luke Laidley embraced and lived this belief to the end on July 4, 2023 where he risked his life for the children who were struggling when their tube flipped on Lake Michigan. His philosophy was to "Give of yourself and expect nothing in return. And become part of something that is greater than yourself." He became part of something bigger, as his death will serve a greater purpose as an organ donor. A life lived with purpose. A life lived to serve for others. A life lived as a hero.

Husband to Lauren Laidley (nee Damico) and father to Lucas, Vivian, and Logan Laidley. Son of Forrest and Diane Laidley, brother to Mary Sachs (Roland), Jeanne Whirry (Steve), Michael Laidley (Kathryn), Anne Sondalle (Craig), Maura Ziemann (Brandon). Son-in-law of Joseph and Pamela Damico. Brother-in-law to Lindsay Bianco (Joseph), and Joseph Damico (Christine). Uncle to Kayla, Jack, and Will Sachs; Molly, Forrest, and Aidan Laidley; Graham and Patrick Sondalle; Campbell, Maeve, Siobhan, and Emmett Ziemann; Joey, Claire, and Jack Bianco; Dominic and Dane Damico.

Funeral Mass for Luke will be at 10:00 am on Saturday July 15th at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 121 E Maple Ave, Libertyville. Visitation will be from 4:00 - 8:00 pm on Friday July 14th at McMurrough Funeral Chapel, 101 Park Pl, Libertyville, IL 60048. Funeral info (847) 362-2626

Unfortunately, I did not know Luke Laidley, but I went to high school with his wife, Lauren. I remember her as a kind person, good student, and well-liked by her peers. So it's not surprising that she married such an amazing person. My heart breaks for her, her family, and Luke's family.
I really don't know what to say, but I think it's important to take joy in the fact that he was in this world for 44 years. It may not seem like a long time, but I'm sure he affected so many others for the better in that time.
I like to think of the saying, "it's not the years in your life that count; it's the life in your years," and Luke must have had quite a bit of that.

I am sorry for your loss. I do not personally know Luke, but I also believe we are drawn to people and their stories in many different ways. I also lost a lot of colleagues on September 11th in the Twin Tower. Your husband also shares the same birth date as my husband of 41 years. Please take some comfort in knowing that Luke survived the attack on 9/11/2001 to save the lives on 7/4/2023. I can't explain the reason I need to reach out to you, but I believe the spirit speaks to us in many different ways. I wish you the best life going forward. Times will not be easy for you or your children. Just know many people, including myself will be thinking about you now and in the future.

We do not know the Laidley family but wish to express our condolences as we share many connections. Both our daughters are alumnae of Carmel Catholic and Boston College and we are St. Joe´s parishioners. Clearly Luke lived up to the BC motto "Ever to Excel." We are certain he is being rewarded in heaven with his own red bandana. Requiescat in pace, Luke.

It is with a heavy heart that I pray for the Laidley family. I did not get a chance to get to know Luke but I do know his brother Mike. I do know this one thing for sure, this world is a better place with this family in it. We do not know why God has taken Luke or his father but, it must be for a higher purpose. If our God is needing builders of Heaven and Men with Honest Hearts and loving Souls then he has chosen correctly. We all hope to aspire to the Laidley level of strength, love and dedication for our own families. May God carry you through these times, I Pray.

I was a neighbor to the Laidley family on Lake Delavan. My children, Genevieve and Danny, were very young when we were neighbors yet I can vividly recall how kind all your children were with mine. The laughter and games that were played in our joined front yards along the lakefront made many fond memories for all of us.
To Forrest and Diane and all the Laidley children, I am so deeply sorry for your loss. Luke was a champion human being and I do so hope his children will feel all the love and honor they deserve for having him as their daddy.
