Lynda Knott Obituary

Lynda Susan Murphy Knott of Chicago, IL, a revered public relations professional and a cherished figure in her community, passed away on November 20, 2023, after a valiant battle with cancer. She is survived by her children, John Walters Knott and Shelby McCord Knott of Chicago, IL; her mother Beverly Jahr Murphy of Sycamore, IL; her siblings Jeanne Murphy Malnati of Kenilworth, IL, Kathleen Murphy Deveny of Glencoe, IL, and Robert Daniel Murphy of Indianapolis, IN; her brothers-in-law Marc A. Malnati and Christopher A. Deveny; and her adored nieces Kelsey Malnati Howell of Kenilworth, IL, Melissa Malnati Molitor (and Thomas) of Wilmette, IL, Kamryn Deveny of Glencoe, IL and Kelley Deveny of Boulder, CO; nephews William Malnati (and Alissa) of New York, NY, Colin Deveny of Chicago, IL, Mackinnon Murphy, Braden Murphy, and Daxton Murphy of Indianapolis, IN; grand-nieces Lucy Howell, Clara Howell, and Addison Molitor; and grand-nephews Max Howell, Miles Molitor, and Remy Malnati.

Born on November 7, 1954, to Ronald and Beverly Murphy in Arlington Heights, IL, and raised in Sycamore, IL, Lynda attended Drake University in Des Moines, IA, where she earned her degree in journalism and was an effervescent cheerleader for the Drake Bulldogs football team. Lynda's journey was marked by her magnetic spirit and exceptional resoluteness, and took her from Arlington Heights, to Sycamore, through Des Moines, to New York, NY, to her true home in Chicago, then on to lives in Chesterton, IN and Sydney, Australia, back and up to Winnetka, IL and finally back to Chicago-where she lived the majority of her life and where she most thrived.

Throughout her 20s, Lynda learned the ropes of her industry and the machinery of the professional world. In 1984, at the age of 30 in Chicago, IL, she founded Murphy Knott Public Relations, which she lead for nearly four decades until her death, helping to craft the corporate messaging of major local, national, and international brands like Miller Brewing Company, IBM, Lou Malnati's Pizzeria, Vienna Beef, Ferrara Candy Company, Stanley Black & Decker, Securitas, Konami, The Merchandise Mart, The Chicago Marathon, and The Winter Olympics, among many others. Her determination to service her clients throughout her battle with cancer spoke volumes of her dedication and prowess in the field, and her pride in her identity as an exemplary and tireless businesswoman of utmost professionalism.

Lynda's impact went beyond her dedication to her career. In 1982, she was married to Andy Knott, her husband of over 20 years. Together with Andy, Lynda had her two children-her two greatest loves-Jack and Shelby.

As a mother, mentor, and best friend to her son, who worked for her at Murphy Knott for nearly a decade, she shared a bond of love, wisdom, joy, and constant analytical interpretation of the daily news cycle. Her son's professional and personal growth, nurtured by her mentorship, stands as a testament to her influential role as a mother.

A great beauty, Lynda was likewise a role model and best friend to her daughter, whom she loved and adored beyond words; upon whom she imparted cultured taste, effortless grace, and unyielding compassion; and for whom her devotion as a mother was without end.

Respecting her wishes for privacy, Lynda's battle with cancer was known only to a few. This discretion, a reflection of her strength and independence, was honored by her family throughout her journey.

A ceremony will be held at 12:30pm on December 2nd at St. Chrysostom's Episcopal Church (1424 N Dearborn St, Chicago, IL 60610) to honor and celebrate Lynda's life. In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to Designs for Dignity, a Chicago-based non-profit for which Lynda was a board member for over a decade.

Lynda leaves behind a legacy of resilience, love, and professional excellence. Her memory will continue to inspire and resonate with all who knew her, especially her children, siblings, and extended family. Her life, lived with purpose and grace, will remain a beacon of inspiration and beauty.

I was deeply sadden to learn of Lynda's death. We were friends, colleagues and confidentes. We regularly met prior to the pandemic so it greatly pains me that as the world got fragmented and then back to some norlmacy that we had lost touch. I truly hope you did not suffer my friend and am happy that you are in a place of peace. Lynda only got more beautiful over the years. She had a love for the business but an even greater and unwavering devotion to her children Shelby and Jack. Prayers and peace to all.

Lynda!! This is a love letter to you, one of the best people I´ve ever known in both my personal and professional lives. You´ve been my touchstone since the 80´s when you trusted me and my fledgling event business to assist with your client projects. You were so young and already so successful... Poised, beautiful, easy, kind, fair with people who you hired, your clients trusted you implicitly, your common sense and big ideas landed prime coverage. As our lives changed and our careers grew over the years, I cherished our lunches and conversations. I will miss your sunshine, optimism and wise counsel, and cannot believe I will never see you again! Sending much love and strength to your family

I was stunned to see this obituary in today's Chicago Tribune. I worked with Lynda at Golin-Harris in the early 1980s, before she left to form her own company. What a beautiful, kind and lovely woman she was. We had a mutual friend in the PR world and the three of us would socialize occasionally. One day we met up with her outside of her place, as she had been walking her dog. She exclaimed that we (her still single girlfriends) should get a dog, as the animal apparently attracted men left and right. It was so sweet and we thought to ourselves, "oh yes, I'm sure the dog had a lot to do with men coming up to make conversation with her". I never grasped it at the time, but clearly she was one of the early professional women success stories, done with style and grace.

First off, I am saddened at the news of her passing. The Lynda I remember from high school obviously carried forth into her career path and to her family. In high school, she was an amazing person always there and respected everyone.

My best memory was before I had decided to move to Texas when I lived in the apartments near the junior high school. I don't remember what the event was but I do remember Lynda and I walking out to the football field late at night. We sat at center field and had a wonderful conversation that border lined on intimate. Good time and a great memory. It was certainly hard to move to Texas after that but the wheels were in motion and could not be stopped. I often thought about reaching out but life got in the way.

Reading the obit makes me happy to know her life was vibrant and fulfilling.

The value of life and how it can impact others is obvious. What a blessing she was to her family and others.

She will be missed.

Lynda and I spent several years together on the Board of Directors for Designs for Dignity. Lynda was a special soul, always a burst of positive energy and love of life. I remember a special time when Lynda hosted the board at her Lincoln Park home for a rooftop party, a special time where we shared life stories and learned about her son and daughter, she was so proud. Lynda we love you, sending prayers as you are healthy now, a soul watching over us all with pure love. XO

Lynda was such a burst of power and energy. We served together on the Board of Directors for Designs for Dignity and spent many a day in planning and conducting charity events. I remember she hosted a rooftop board of directors party at her home in Lincoln Park, such happy times. I truly loved being in her presence. My heart is with her family, friends and everyone in her life, we will miss her dearly. Love to you Lynda, your soul is healthy and free, sharing the love and watching over us all. xo
