Here she is, lost in the wind,
Like a ship that never comes in
Standing all alone.

Sing a sad song for a good girl.

Dear Joe,
My mother called minutes ago to tell me the terrible news. Although I have not seen you for almost two decades, I am so saddened by Marina's death.
I knew Marina from the time she was thirteen through the birth of your first child, and she was the dearest, sweetest girl imaginable-and the brightest.
I will always retain happy memories of Christmases at the Markovich's and darling Marina's beautiful presence.
My deepest condolences to you, your girls, Mirjana and Marko.

My heart hurts for you, and may you be comforted by God's love for you and the knowledge that Marina no longer has pain or sorrow.

Marina was a beautiful and joyful person who warmly welcomed me and so many others to the U of C in her job as a dormitory Resident Assistant. She was full of life and one couldn't help but smile around her. I wish her family and friends comfort and peace in the knowledge that Marina had such a positive impact on so many.

Dearest Joe, I cannot tell you how truly sorry I am for your loss. I cannot imagine the feelings of pain and emptiness. Those of us who know you feel sick that you and your daughters have so much to bear today and in the future. It is at times like these that I must tell you about my Savior. He died so that we might have abundant life. He is the only one who truly understands our pain and sorry. He promises to walk with you through the valley of the shadow of death so that we have nothing to fear. He said that He would never leave you or forsake you. He said He came into the world to bind up the wounded and to heal the broken hearted. He invites us to come to Him, all of us that are weary and heavy burdened, so that He will give us rest. He said He would give you peace in the midst of raging storms and indeed, He is the only way to know true peace. He will comfort you in your darkest hour. He will be there as you grieve and mourn the loss of your amazing wife, companion and friend. I pray that you know Him personally but if you don't, please cry out to Him right now! He will make His presence known and real to you. Ask Him to come into your life so that He can prepare and assist you in raising Arabella, Vivienne, and Bridget. Jesus has all knowledge and understanding is in His hands. We all need a Savior but right now, Jesus could make a big difference in your daughter's lives. He will see you all through this life (without precious Marina) and will turn this unbelievable tragedy into a way to bring glory to His Name. With Jesus Christ you will never be alone and without hope. Through Him you can look forward to seeing your wonderful Marina again in heaven. Today, lets all thank God for Marina's life and the time she spent on earth and the gifts of love she gave to her family and friends. My continued prayers are with you, your daughters, close friends, in-laws and family. To you all who are grieving the loss of Marina – may the Lord bless you with His comfort.

My heart aches for the loss of Marina. It was such a privilege to walk with her as she sought to live life to it's absolute fullest during her valiant battle. Despite the devastating effects of her illness, she shone a brilliant light wherever she went and her passing leaves the world a darker place for all who knew her. I pray her determination, love of life and absolute devotion to all of you remains as you grieve the sorrow of her loss.

Bella, Vivi, and Bridget, I can't tell you how sad I am to hear this news. I feel lucky to have known your mom. She was hilarious! I will always remember her with a smile on her face- which was really contagious =) I remember being super excited when I found out she was pregnant with each of you. We will all miss her, but I hope you take some comfort in knowing we will all see her again one day. Until then, make her as proud as you always have. I love you girls and remember if you ever want to talk, I'm just a phone call away! <3 Emily
