WITH SAD HEART, I JUST HEARD OF MY DEAR OLD FRIEND, MARSHALL,S DEATH. IN LATER YEARS, WE GREW APART BECAUSE OF DIVERCE INTERESTS., AND LOST CONTACT NOT HEARING FROM EACH OTHER FOR DECADES...THE REQUEST FOR THIS GUEST BOOK WAS FOR JOKES AND MEMORIES. SO, HERE GOES: I FIRST MET MARSHAL WHEN MY FATHER, SAMUEL PEARL, AND HIS FATHER, M.Y. FINKLEMAN, WERE DEAR FRIENDS IN THE 1930'S/1940'S AT THE COVENANT CLUB.IN CHICAGO. WE, SONS, WERE THROWN TOGETHER SINCE WE LIVED CLOSE TOGETHER, I, AT 3300 LAKE SHORE AND MARSHALL AT ABOUT 3800 LAKE SHORE DRIVE. WE ALSO SAW EACH OTHER FREQUENTL IN THE NEIGHBORHOOD, AT EACHOTHER'S HOUSES AND EVERY SATURDAY AT THE CLUB, FOR ATHLETICS AND LUNCH.... WHEN WE GREW TO NEARLY ADULTHOOD, MARSHALL ATTENDED DRAKE UNIVEVESITY AND I ATTENDED PRE-LEGAL AT DE PAUL. THEN CAME THAT FATEFUL AFTERNOON AT THE COVENANT CLUB, WHERE MARHALL'S LOCKER AND MINE WERE CLOSE TOGETHER AND I WILL NEVER FORGET THE CONVERSATION. WE WERE BETWEEN SEMESTERS AND HE CAME IN ON THE TRAIN FROM DES MOINES FROM DRAKE. ONE THING LED TO ANOTHER AND HE SAID HE WAS LEAVING BACK TO SCHOOL ON MONDAY AND I SHOULD GO WITH HIM AND CONTINUE MY SCHOOLING WITH HIM AT DRAKE. WE WOULD HAVE A BALL.. I SAID WHY, AND HE SAID THERE WERE REALLY BEAUTIFUL GIRLS THERE AND THEY OUTNUMBERED THE JEWISH BOYS AND HE CONVINCED ME..THIS WAS SATURDAY AND WE BOTH GOT ON THE TRAIN AND I WITHOUT BEING ACCEPTED AND MY TRANSCRIPTS WERE TO ARRIVE AND THEY DID 3 WEEKS LATER. HE WAS RIGHT, WE BECAME AEPI FRATERNITY BROTHERS GOING THROUGH THE SAME PLEDGE CLASS AND ROOM MATES. TOGETHER WITH A THIRD PLEDGE, MARTY DREBIN, WERE WERE AS CLOSE FRIENDS AS YOU COULD GET. HE WAS A GREAT CARD PLAYER, BOTH GIN RUMMY AND A CRAZY GAME CALLED CLOBBIASH. HE WAS SO HAPPY TO TEACH ME THAT GAME. HE WAS A WHIZ!! HE USED TO KID ME THAT I PUT HIM THROUGH SCHOOL WITH THE GAMBLING LOSSES TO HIM. WHEN THROUGH GREAT LUCK, ONE DAY I ACTULLY WON $100 FROM HIM (ALOT OF MONEY IN THOSE DAYS0 i ANNOUNCED THAT I QUIT ALL CARDS GAMES SO I COULD TELL EVERYONE THAT THE LAST TIME I PLAYED GIN RUMMY WAS WITH MARSHALL FINKLEMAN AND WON $100 DOLLARS. THAT IS A TRUE STORY AND I HAVE NEVER PLAYED GIN OR CLOBBIASH, SINCE THAT DAY. AND WHEN ASKED TO PLAY. I WOULD PROUDLY BOAST THAT THE LAST TIME I PLAYED, I BEAT THAT GREAT PLAYER MARSHALL. THERE WERE MANY PRACTICAL JOKES, BACK AND FORTH AND WE OLDSTERS AT THE FRATERNITY HOUSE REMEMBER THE $5 BET HE MADE THAT I COULDN'T CHUG MUCHO BOURBON. STUPIDLY I ACCEPTED THAT BET AND WON, BUT HE SAID IF I THREW UP, WHICH I HAD TO DO, I WOULD LOSE. THE PRESIDENT OF THE FRATERNATY MADE HIM PAY UP, EVEN THO I HAD TO GET "RID OF THE BOOZE"..I AM HEARSICK AT THE LOSS OF MARSHALL. HE WILL BE MISSED BY MANY. SYDNEY PEARL

Dear Lisa, Steven and Anne. This is Paulette Rushing-Williams. I was so struck by the news of Marshalls passing. Although I haven't been in contact with him lately, I still feel I am missing a part of me. He has always open his heart to me when I needed him most. He was always a pleasant boss to work with. I spoke highly of him and never forgot about him. I'll never forget how grounded he kept me. He always kept a smile on my face. He most definitely will be missed. I'm originally from Chicago but not residing in Georgia and still think about him after almost 30 years. Anne, Lisa and Steven keep the faith.

Dear Anne, Steven, Lisa, and our family, everywhere - The disbelief and unreality of my loss, are yet more profound than I know. How can I accept he is no longer here? He is alive in my spirit and thoughts and I feel his presence in my mind and heart as always. "You are with me, sweet Marshall, and I with you. We shall love and protect you, in our father's kingdom, forever. Give us the strength we need to carry on. Amen, Neal."

I met Mr. Marshal Finkelman in Pakistan and in the US, we worked together and we had had excellent business relationships. Whenever i needed his help and support he was there and I do sympathize with Anne Finkelman and I wish and pray that his soul rest in peace.

Dear Steven, Lisa and Anne
Almost every day for the past twenty odd years I have had Marshall in my life in some fashion. His deep love of his profession was truly contagious and his generosity of wisdom and knowlege was legend. Every time I lift a well made piece of jewelry or see a wonderful gemstone I see the face of a really good man and am reminded to be grateful for his presence in my life.
May the memory of his sense of humor and his great loyalty warm you always.

My deepest sympathy on your loss. I worked for Marshall from 1983-1985. I learned an extraordinary amount about jewelry and gemstones from him that I have retained all these years. I will never forget when he told me to take home a $15,000 black opal so I could create a special design for one of his best customers. I was just 25 at the time, and in retrospect, it was remarkable that he trusted me with this exquisite gem! Marshall was a true gem himself!

Dear Anne, Lisa, and Steve
I am at a loss for words and have no way to express my sorrow for your loss. Marshall was like a father to me and a friend. He was a great teacher and mentor and so much fun to be around. He had a zest for life and the finer things in it. He will be missed by many peers, family and friends and by an industry that he grew up in and made a large contribution in. Marshall was a leader and will always be remembered. In this world full of pain and sorrow, maybe once in a lifetime, you'll find someone who will make you feel wonderful the way he could with his charm and smile. Hang on to that no matter what. I for one will miss him and take away many fond memories.

Dear Finkelmans,
Though I saw you only very infrequently at family gatherings over the past 70+ years I fondly remember that Marshall always had a good story or joke ready for me. My sincere condolences to all. / Larry Sweet

Dear Finkelman Family:
The Rappaport family want to share their thoughts and prayers with all of you on the lose of a long time neighbor and friend. Earle and Marshall with Steve and Bret on their first fishing trip to Canada and the girls Tracey and Lisa in Indian Princesses. Bret and Steve in Indian Guides. All good memories and good times. Marshall also taught Earle about having big fish tanks. Not to mention all the pieces Earle bought for me from Marshall. The two of them always had a good time picking things out for me, and I certainly enjoyed getting them. We will miss Marshall.

Dear Anne, Steven, and Lisa, I am so sorry to hear about your loss. I knew Marshall for over half my life and learned a great deal from him mailnly how to buy from privates and I still can't buy as well as he did nor will I ever. For some odd reason whenever I called him, I always addressed him as Rabbi and he addressed me as Doctor in which yeah right me being a doctor and him a rabbi. Oy Vey god help all of us. He will be greatly missed but the memories will live on forever. Again my sincere condolences go out to all of you.

My older brother, Marshall, as our father, M. Y. Finkelman, excelled as world famous buyers, to whom every purchase was "highly imperfect". They would have loved to bid on this obit.

Dear Lisa, Steve and Anne, I'm very sad to hear of Marshalls passing away. I fondly remember many games of backgammon at family events, his delightful sense of humor, us passing funny "one liners" to one another, many laughs, and how Marshall cheered me up and made me feel good about myself when I was very confused about my life. He was a very positive influence for me. I was fortunate to pay a visit when in Chicago a few years ago, and thanked him for his kindness toward me. I often think of him and remember his outrageous wit and wisdom. He will be deeply missed.
