Michael V. Garvey, born December 30, 1938 on the South Side to loving parents Zita Young Garvey and Vincent B. Garvey, peacefully joined them on April 20, 2021. Mike traveled the world - all 50 US states and countries on seven continents – with his wife of twenty years, Christine D. Garvey, nee Golema Gucwa. Christine and Mike met on a blind date set up by Ann and Kevin Garvey. Mike was a beloved father of two blended families: Michelle Marie Garvey (d. 1965), Deborah Garvey (Fadi Maamari), Noelle Garvey (Byron Sparrow) and Lisa Garvey (Greg Proctor); Annemarie Gucwa (Alan Yuhas), and Joseph Gucwa (Elizabeth McNichol Gucwa). Loving and engaged grandfather of Joel & Anna Yuhas; Joseph, Katie, Nicole, Paul Michael and Gracelyn Gucwa; Christopher Maamari & Byron Sparrow III, whom Mike and Christine raised for three years. Mike is survived by his four adored brothers and sisters-in-law: Kevin and Ann; Terry and Mary Jean; and Ken and Madge Garvey; and Cynthia Golema. He is predeceased by brother-in-law Steve Lares Jr. Mike is surrounded by a loving family of twelve nieces and nephews, and numerous cousins, grandnieces and grandnephews. Mike's first wife of 35 years, clinical nurse and Louisville native Margaret Weber Garvey, died of metastatic breast cancer in 1999. Reflecting his strong Catholic faith, Mike served others his entire life. He was legal guardian to his aunt Lucille Young Schneider, and yearslong caregiver to his mother, mother-in-law, Doris Weber, and his first wife in their terminal illnesses. Mike was godfather to four children. Mike was a perpetually curious erudite reader, Civil War history enthusiast, railroad buff, foreign film expert, and stereotype-blasting ebullient CPA with a wry sense of humor. He was a lifelong Chicago resident of the Chatham, Beverly and West Lawn neighborhoods, St. Clotilde, Christ the King, St. Barnabas, and St. Mary Star of the Sea parishes. He received the Beverly Theatre Guild's Distinguished Service Award, was treasurer of the 20th Century Railroad Club and recipient of its President's Award, and was Hall of Fame member of the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum. He was also a lifetime member of the Hawaiian Railway Society, and member of SABR Society for American Baseball Research, the Illinois CPA Society, and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He was educated at Christ the King School '52, Leo High School '56, and Loyola University '62. He was secretary of the Loyola University chapter of the honorary accounting fraternity Beta Alpha Psi. He worked as an internal auditor at Interlake Steel Corporation and International Harvester, and controller at Consoer Townsend & Associates, before striking out on his own in 1985 as a personal and small-business tax accountant. Family and friends will gather on Friday, June 11, 2021 at Christ the King Church, 9235 S. Hamilton Ave., Chicago, IL 60643 for visitation 9:30am-11:00am. My brother Mike was one of the nicest brothers any guy could have. He was honest and a loyal friend to everyone and loved travelling the world with Christine. He was devoted to his accountancy practice and had the highest ethical standards of any CPA I knew. He loved his daughters unconditionally and will be remembered by everyone who knew him. Farewell, Mike, until we meet again.

My deepest condolences. I will sorely miss Mike very much. I enjoyed our annual visits and conversations (since 2001). He was so knowledgeable and interesting.
