Michael Keenan Obituary

Michael Courtland Keenan, proud family man and a leading figure in the insurance industry, died December 26, surrounded by family. Although he was passionate about the Chicago Cubs, Blackhawks and Bears, as well as his Fighting Illini, what Mike loved most was being with and caring for his large extended family of 4 children and their spouses, 9 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, 4 dogs, 3 cats and, the woman he committed his life to for 59 years, Elizabeth (Libby) Lummus Keenan.

Mike lived in Evanston most of his life. When his parents were no longer able to care for their four children, they were taken in by relatives, except for Mike, who was placed in a home for boys, Lawrence Hall, in Chicago. He lived there from ages 8 to 13. At Wells High School in Chicago, he was a lefty who once threw a no-hitter and president and valedictorian of his class, earning admission to Princeton. With limited financial support, he instead headed to The University of Illinois, but left junior year when his father died. It fell to him to care for his mother, which he did for the rest of her life.

Mike started as an agent at Prudential in 1961, and met Libby a few years later, marrying her and taking on her kids - Harry, 5, and Sandy, 4 - as his own. Soon, Michael Jr. and Lucy came along. When people asked, 'Which are yours and which are Libby's," he'd answer, "Darned if I know."

He was an optimist and a kind spirit, welcoming good news with a "That's terrific!" He loved to win at bridge, basement hockey and to sing show tunes, and often with Libby on piano. He qualified for the Boston Marathon in 1979 at 42. Mike was disciplined and frugal, saving 25 cents for every dollar earned and, though he rarely talked about the hard times, he never forgot where he came from. His generosity was boundless, donating to hundreds of charities. While quick to indulge others, he was content wearing the same track suit for decades.

Much of what he missed out on as a child, he did for his children and others. He was president of the Jaycees and a founder of the Evanston Boys Hockey Association. He coached his sons' teams and never missed Lucy's soccer games or Sandy's tennis. While he wasn't able to finish college, he made certain his children did, debt free.

The Keenans spent summers on White Lake in Michigan. Although not a gifted golfer, he was known to conduct midnight raids with his grandchildren, fishing for golf balls and frogs in the water hazards at the White Lake Golf Club, where he was a member. That was about as unlawful as he got. One of his best days was Game 2 of the 2016 World Series with Mike Jr. in Cleveland, both in Cubs gear among a sea of Indians fans, sitting front row.

Mike worked into his 80s. He was president of the National Association of Life Underwriters in1984. He joined the LIFE Foundation in 1998, raising funds to promote the insurance industry. In 2010, he won the John Newton Russell Memorial Award, the highest honor in the industry.

For 20 years, he and Libby hosted Christmas trips for their children and grandchildren to ensure that the Keenan family traditions would endure. Donations may be made in his name to The Humane Society.

Mike was a mentor to me early in my career as a life insurance professional. We used to meet in his office once a week on the same day at the same time. He was very generous with his time, and he taught me so much about being disciplined and staying focused, much like the way he lived his life. Mike loved his family dearly, and especially enjoyed spending time at the "cottage" in Michigan. My wife and I took a trip to MI one summer and he insisted on having us stop by to meet the family. We did and they were all so pleasant. While there, he gave us a bueatiful hand carved wooden bowl. He was a kind, warm-hearted gentleman who will be missed dearly. I'm very fortunate to have met him. My thoughts go out to the family during this difficult time.

Mike was a recognized leader in the life insurance industry, and was well known for being frugal, a dedicated hard worker, and for always knowing the locations of the nearest Subway Sandwich shops. He was an advocate for the Life Foundation from its inception and helped it grow from an idea to a recognized institution. Our thoughts go out to the Keenan Family.

I had the great pleasure of working with Mike for many years at Life Happens. We always had a smile on his face and wanted to know what I was up to outside of work. We talked about baseball (his beloved Cubs and my Phillies) on many business trips across the country. Thinking of the whole Keenan family.

Oh, Libby. No wonder you've been on my mind lately. We need to "do lunch" again and catch up. I'm so sorry to read of Mike's death. What a long and wonderful life he had! I wish I'd known him.

Dear Libby and my cousins,
Mike was the sun that kept the planets in alignment for so many, most particularly for my mother (his sister), Mary. He was rock-solid in his love and support for his family, while his fundamental goodness and generosity of spirit was evident all his life. I loved his ability to tap into a goofy side -
he somehow kept the child within him whole and available when his early life became bleak; it's one of the many things I always admired about him. I'm so sorry for you all - it's a massive blow to lose a wonderful father and husband, but please know he was well-loved by his extended family, whose lives he touched in a million ways.
All my love,
Julie

This news breaks my heart. I had the absolute pleasure of knowing Mike. I was the nanny for 3 of Mike´s grandchildren. You would have thought I was one of his grandchildren too for the way he would treat me when out to visit his family in Seattle. Always so kind, generous and caring. I´ll never forget traveling with the kids and Lucy to Evanston and then on to White Lake to visit Libby and Mike. After reading his obituary and seeing how much he loved baseball, that cubs game we all went to means so much more to me now. I´m feeling very lucky to have known Mike Keenan. Sending all of my love to the family, I am just so sorry for your loss.

Libby & Family, we are so sorry to read of Mike's passing. We got to know him a little when we bought your speedboat for our kids many years ago. A real gentleman! It was nice to live down the lake from your cottage for 43 years and to run into you often. I even found wedding photos along South Shore on one of my walks. They had blown off the car when momentarily placed there. Libby, you made some very delicious brownies for our family as a thank-you! Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Libby and family, So sad to read of Mike's passing and I am glad I had a visit with him not long ago at White Lake Assisted Living. I had gone to visit my friend down the hall and just happened to bump into Mike. He knew me and we had a nice chat. Mike was always so very friendly and he will be missed not only by his family but the many friends he had.
My thoughts and prayers are with you at this difficult time
