Morris Beechen Obituary

Morris Bradley "Brad" Beechen, 82, died January 10, 2022, after a prolonged illness. A longtime resident of Chicago and the Streeterville neighborhood, Brad was born and raised in Cedar Rapids, IA, the eldest of four children born to Abraham and Maxine Beechen. Brad graduated with honors from Wesleyan University in Middletown, CT, where he was a member of the Delta Kappa Epsilon fraternity, captained the baseball team and was the first recipient of the prestigious Walter MacNaughten Award, recognizing outstanding baseball achievement. Following college, Brad moved to Chicago to pursue a long career in advertising, working with such notable clients as Jewel-Osco and Greyhound.

In retirement, Brad continued to pursue his lifelong passions for golf and baseball. He took many golf vacations with his wife, Mary Jane, playing at some of the most famous golf courses in the world, including The Old Course at St. Andrews, in Scotland. And Brad spent five years as an usher at Wrigley Field for the Chicago Cubs, where he made cherished friendships within the organization and with fans. He was also a devotee of crossword puzzles, a connoisseur of fine barbecue, a cribbage enthusiast, and an avid reader. Brad is survived by his loving wife Mary Jane Beechen; his son Adam Beechen (Mindy) from a prior marriage; three nieces and a nephew. He was predeceased by his siblings, Joan, Marilynn and Douglas. Interment services will be private. Contributions in Brad's memory can be made to the Evans Scholars Foundation (www.wgaesf.org) or to the charity of your choice.

I met Mr. Beechen my freshman year of college, where Adam I lived on the same dorm hallway. Now, we didn't get to MEET Vanna White, but we got to hear all about Vanna White because he was in charge of chaperoning her around town on a book tour. I will add that I learned a remarkably useful life hack from that - brush your teeth in the shower. Mr. Beechen was funny - in a quiet, wry way I admired greatly. He was very kind to all of us who made up Adam's new group of Northwestern friends. Later in life, I was immensely proud to be invited to participate in the Beechen family football pool. Never knew, Mr. Beechen, that your name was Morris. I love that - the name and learning something new about you. Dad of my dear friend who was also a friend. I will miss you.
