Noah Korman Obituary

Noah William Empire Korman, 29. Beloved son of Jeffrey and the late Keshia Korman. Loving brother of Maia Korman, Rafiat Mustapha and Rukayat Mustapha. Dear nephew of Kim Gadson Jackson, Detrya (Andrew) Youngblood, David Korman and Gail (John) Samuelson. Born woke and gone way to soon. We were not sure of his name, until it rained for part of 39 straight days before his birth. He was born very calm, with his eyes open and looking around as he emerged reluctantly from Keshia. He treasured his rich and diverse background and he felt it meant something that he was born as the rain was ending and that he was part of the continuity of his African-American and Jewish heritages. This carried very strongly through his Bar Mitzvah where his Torah Portion was the story of Noah (by chance) and he treasured his pilgrimage to Israel. In Noah's short life, he impacted so many lives through his compassionate, encouraging, cheerful manner. He was a kind, gentle, embracing soul from the beginning. He could laser focus on the people and things that mattered most -- whether helping people through their dark times or excitedly encouraging them to pursue their dreams. Between the lines, he was a fierce and accomplished competitor – Chess, Dance, ETHS Basketball, Soccer, Track, and Wesleyan soccer. When he played, Noadinho danced, and dished assists as he distracted the defense. But most of all, Afro Thunda's passion and genius was expressed through film – screenwriting, directing, filming, editing – he saw the world with a special lens and wanted to show people what he saw in an entertaining and educative manner. He made silly and serious films. He made documentaries and sci-fi fantasies. In Evanston, at Wesleyan, and in Hollywood people recognized he was the real deal. After summers working at different Hollywood studios, he was offered a Creative Assistant job by Tobey Maguire (Spider Man) when his Bi-Polar reared its ugly head and Noah had to return home to Evanston. He had made great strides managing his mood regulation disorder. He was upbeat about his friends' and his futures. He recently completed his most ambitious and best script yet. The people involved in that project from Evanston, Wesleyan and Hollywood want to make that film and we are fund-raising to make that happen. He was gifted with a unique perspective and the ability to express it for everyone. He had so much love for his family and friends, as there is so much love for him. Even with his mental health struggles, he was thoughtful and loving to the end and beyond. To keep everyone safe and healthy, the chapel service and interment are private. I am so sad for you and Maia, Jeff. I remember Noah as he anticipated kindergarten. What am I going to learn? He asked. You responded, How to count. He counted quickly to 100 and asked, What else? He was eager to get going. What a bright and beautiful person he was!

Today's service was very moving. Noah's golden afro really was a shining light and I feel fortunate to have briefly known him in high school. Thanks to all the tremendous speakers who so properly celebrated Noah's full life. And the singing! An incredibly personal touch.

Noah made an everlasting impression on me as a guest at my home while traveling through Atlanta. He was so full of passion, curiosity, and gratitude. We chatted about New Orleans, Jazz, food, musical families, and on and on. I´ll never forget his smile, or his matter-of-fact conversation about being both black and Jewish. May God hold you in sweet and restful peace Noah.
