Memories and Condolences

Not sure what to say?

April 1, 2011

Dear Maura & Fenlon Family,

Please accept condolences on behalf of the Herbstritt & Murphy families. Paul was a gentle and caring man who was a pillar of the parish at St. Vincents. My fondest memory of your dad was years after playing football on his team, I mentioned to him that back when I was in grade school I looked up to him and in fact thought he was a figure like Vince Lombardi to me. In his cool manner he replied, "Terry, back in those days I too thought I was Vince Lombardi!" He was a good man who gave freely of his time and talent to the kids at SVF. You must be very proud of his legacy. God Bless

Dear Maura & extended Fenlon Clan,

It was with deep sadness that I first learned of Coach Fenlon's passing from my friend and classmate Maura, and it was with equal regret that I was not able to pay my respects to each of you in person. Mr. Fenlon (he was "Coach" & "Mr." interchangeably to me) was not only a man of high personal integrity and standards, he was remarkably patient as an otherwise "old school" Football Coach. With me starting out in 7th grade and knowing literally nothing about the game, he put me into a scrimmage early on as a defensive tackle. On the 1st snap of the ball I lunged forward, wrapping my arms around the ankles of the offensive lineman across from me - tackling him, and allowing the ball carrier to scamper happily toward the end zone! Coach Fenlon gave me the hook and sat me down on the sideline (as you might guess), but then he surprised me. He chose to build me up rather than tear me down, and I discovered right then that I would run through a brick wall (or his meat-grinder drills) for him ANY day! If there are animals in Heaven, & Isaiah rather assures us of this being the case, then I trust Coach Fenlon to be in the presence of his Savior, walking Alice on streets paved with gold! God Bless you all in this time of grief over the loss of a very fine man, under whose influence I learned much and am still benefitting today! 1John 5:13

Dear Maura & Family, I was very sad to learn of your dad's passing. I know we haven't spoken for many years - but I still remember the good times we had - and the stories you would tell of your family. May your memories always warm your heart & bring a smile. My deepest sympathies to you all. Lynn Mentz (Madigan's)
