PAUL SCHIMERT Obituary

Paul Schimert, M.D., passed away peacefully in his home on May 27, 2011, at the age of 94. His beloved wife of 63 years, Eva Doerstling Schimert, passed away three years earlier. Dr. Schimert was born and raised in Hungary, the son of Margit Antal and Dr. Johannes Gustav Schimert. Paul Schimert joined his father and four brothers in the family tradition of medicine. He graduated in 1941 from Petrus Pazmany University School of Medicine in Hungary. Toward the end of WWII, he fled Hungary and went to Berlin, where he met his future wife while tending to civilians as a roving medic. In 1951, Paul and Eva Schimert, and their two daughters, immigrated to America. Settling in Chicago, Dr. Schimert established a practice in internal medicine, serving the immigrant community. His fellowship in 1955 at Northwestern University's Wesley Memorial Hospital ignited a lifelong passion for cardiology. Dr. Schimert had a long career at Illinois Masonic Medical Center, where he built Chicago's preeminent cardiovascular program of its time. Dr. Schimert was a true pioneer in the field of Cardiology as one of the first to perform groundbreaking procedures such as balloon angioplasty and coronary stenting. He also conducted extensive early studies in cardiac electrophysiology, having envisioned that field to have tremendous potential for cardiac interventional treatment. Dr. Schimert's most driving personal theme was the pursuit of excellence. He was known for taking on the most difficult cases, and succeeding with them. Paul Schimert had an inventive spirit, finding creative solutions to problems. He was an avid sailor who could be spotted on Lake Michigan or the Long Island Sound, pushing the limits of his sailboat and reveling in the "glorious wind". He enjoyed the hobby of wood-working, having built his own 18-foot sailboat out of mahogany wood. Dr. Schimert also maintained a lifelong pursuit in the exploration of philosophy, history, and religion. He was tremendously proud of his Hungarian heritage and often longed to return to Hungary in his later years. Paul and Eva Schimert raised five daughters, while long-time residents of Highland Park, IL. They spent their retirement years in Lyme, Connecticut, enjoying the New England outdoors, the Atlantic coast, fresh lobsters, and visits with their eight grandchildren. Dr. Schimert is survived by his children Cornelia Schimert (Bill Solodow), Catharina Schimert, Clarissa Schimert, Claudia Schimert (Brian Derrington), and Cristina Lasko (Bennett Lasko); and grandchildren Sara, Marcus and Julian Lampert, Anya and Elena Solodow, and Samantha, Isaac and Sofia Lasko. The family would like to gratefully acknowledge the exceptional care provided by his in-home caregiver, Euclin Gunness, his very supportive team of health-care providers and Dr. Kornelia Keszler. Dr. Schimert was cremated. The family will have a celebration of his life in mid-summer. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice Care in Westchester and Putnam, located in Tarrytown, New York, and Doctors without Borders.

Sadly, many years later I learned about the passing of Dr Paul Schimert. My father, Dr. Imre Illes was a colleague of his many years ago at Illinois Masonic. I remember their friendship and mutual respect. They both had Hungary in common as their birthplace. Sincere condolences from Judy Illes, daughter of Dr. Illes.

So far I never met again any medical staff so free, and so skillful and a leader like Paul Schimert.

Dr Paul Schimert was one of the most colorful faculty at Illinois Masonic Medical Center when were residents. Bapu was also his resident rotating in cardiology. He was a great intellectual and dedicated teacher and philosopher we rarely or never come across in our life time. While he had left Chicago after his retirement, he was always in our mind. He has contributed extensively to the wisdom of all the students (residents) who passed through his service at Illinois Masonic Medical Center .

We were fortunate that our short journeys through our life gave us the opportunity to enjoy his presence during our formative years at Illinois Masonic Medical Center. Paul would be remembered throughout our lives.

Just read about Paul and wanted to pass along my condolences...like Margo Elson, we grew up as neighbors, us directly across the street. Eva often chased me and my friends out of her yard, as we loved to play baseball and the Schimert driveway was "center field"! Always knew of Paul's wonderful reputation and am happy to see that he was able to enjoy such a long retirement and that Eva was with him for most of it. My best to the girls--hope you are all doing well!

Paul and Eva and you five "girls" were such wonderful neighbors and I have very fond memories of all of you, beginning with when we all worked to steam the old wallpaper off the walls of your house on Cherokee. That was a big job, but it sure was fun being with you. Your parents always made Mary, Natalie and me feel welcome in your home and I know my Mom was happy to have you in our house, too. I hope they are all neighbors in their "new house" now and looking down on all of us and being proud!

My best love to you all!

Dr Schimert took care of my Father in 1969 at Ill Masonic Hospital. When we brought our Dad we didn't think he would last the week. By the 3rd week we took him home and he had another 4 years. I will never forget him. He was a great doctor and man. Frank J Kloiber

What a remarkable man! Cardiology with Dr Schimert was my first clinical rotation at Illinos Masonic in 1980. He was imposing in voice and stature. His lessons on Medicine could be transposed to life in general. When others would be content to sit on their heels, Dr Schimert pressed for commitment and action. He'd assess situations in detail then make a decision. Everyone loved him for his energy and inquisitiveness, even though we tagged along with him well into the evening....every evening.
He became my father's doctor and kept him well based on the best understanding of heart disease available.
I'm grateful for such a teacher and hope he enjoyed the retirement he worked for, close to the water and sailing in the company of family and friends

I had the pleasure and previlege to work with Paul decades ago at IMMC at a time of rapid clinical advances, education and research at that institution. Paul was such an important factor in accomplishing these objectives. I treasure the memories of having Paul as a friend and collegue. My condolences go out to Paul's family on their loss of this good man.He will be missed.
