ROBERT EDER Obituary

Robert W. Eder, Dec. 2, 1919 to March 18, 2012, beloved husband of the late Margaret Ann Gladstone; loving father of Robert Jr. (Janet), Laura Kearney, Karen (Joe) Romano, Joe (Shelli), Mary Madden (Ray Coyne), Paul (Anne) and Julie Oskroba; cherished grandfather of many and great-grandfather of one. Born in Chicago, IL on Dec. 2, 1919, the second son of late John W. and Emma (Robl) Eder; dear brother of the late John (late Louise), late Bernard (Harriett), late William, Francis (Mary K), Charles (Bernie), and the late George. Bob, a 38-year employee of the Chicago Tribune, was educated at Holy Cross Seminary (Notre Dame, IN) and Mundelein Seminary before deciding to express his life and love of God as a member of the laity. After serving honorably in the US Navy in World War II, he took up sales as a career. He landed his dream job, selling advertising for the Chicago Tribune, in 1946. After marrying the love of his life, Margaret Ann Gladstone in 1952, Bob experienced many years of success and fulfillment - as a husband, father, salesman, golfer and sports aficionado. Bob's seven children all attended and graduated from Ascension Elementary School in Oak Park. He was very active in Ascension parish all those years, and beyond the time his children attended school there - including the Holy Name Society, the Parish Finance Committee, the Knights of Columbus, and lay server of communion. Bob continued to serve his local parish in retirement in Michigan City, IN and Ft. Lauderdale, FL. Bob passed away in the company of loving members of his family. He touched many lives with his commitment to Christian service. He will be deeply missed and remembered by all. Visitation Thursday, 3 to 8 p.m. at Blake-Lamb Funeral Home, 5015 Lincoln Ave., Lisle, (on Rt. 53, 1/2 mile S. of Ogden Ave. / Rt. 34). Lying in State Friday, 10 a.m. until time of Funeral Mass, 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Monastery Chapel, 1910 W. Maple Ave., Lisle. I have such great memories of Bob Eder. Many of them center around those wonderful Elmwood block parties. Remember pennies in the sawdust? And also listening to White Sox games on the front walk. Remembering your Dad is bringing me great joy this evening. God bless!!

To Laura and the others
Please accept our condolences on Bob's passing. He truly was a gentleman. We have many great memories of Bob at Morning Mass and on the golf course. He added lots ot our village at St.Andrews.
May God bless you all.

Bob was the manager of the Chicago Tribune's Financial Staff in the late sixties. I joined the staff from the Classified Department. Bob was an oustanding manager. He provided valueable insight into advertising sales that I carried with me through my career in national magazine ad sales. Working with Bob, Charlie Shanley and Jack Specht was a learning experience and a joy.
In recent years, Connie, my wife, and I have had the pleasure of meeting Bob's wonderful granddaughter, Sheila. It brought back my memories of the Tribune years. Connie and I have Bob and the Eder family in our prayers. God bless you.

Many mornings Bob rode with me from Oak Park to the Chicago Tribune parking lot. We had great conversations and he was a great guy. My prayers go with him and his family.

Must I remind you of Bob's one failure in life. When I was a kid he and your uncle Bill tried to teach me to swin. Guess what, I still cannot swim. I am known as his favorite girl cousin on his father's side! Mary Eder

To Laura and others,

Your dad was gentle and a gentleman. We have fond memories of both your Mom and Dad, and their many kindnesses they spread around Long Beach C.C. and St. Andrews Village.

Respectfully,
Tom and Linda Sperling

To the Eders,

Sorry to read about your dad. I have many fond memories of both your mom and your dad, of course. Hours of basketball in the backyard... Sitting in the living room with your dad watching the Sox games... Hanging out on the front porch in the summer... Your mother and father were always great to all of us who hung around your house -- which is saying something considering there were already seven of you there!

My love to you all.
