Robert "Bob" C. Grant, Toms River, NJ; Legendary Conservative Talk Radio Host who entertained and informed legions of fans during an on-air career that spanned more than 50 years, died peacefully, in Hillsborough, NJ, on Tuesday, December 31, 2013 after a short illness; he was 84 years old. Born Robert Ciro Gigante in Chicago in 1929, he was a 1946 graduate of Steinmetz High School, and following that, the University of Illinois. He served in the Illinois Army National Guard in 1948-49 as part of the 132nd Infantry Regiment in Chicago and in the U.S. Navy Reserves from 1950-58 attached to the Naval Air Station at Glenview, IL. His broadcasting career began in the late 1940's at WBBM in Chicago. He moved to Los Angeles where he hosted radio and television talk shows on KNX. In the mid 1960s he first developed his confrontational talk radio style at KABC with a focus on politics and conservative issues. He relocated to New York City in 1970 and joined the talk radio team at WMCA. From there, his career took off, and included successful stops at WOR and WWDB in Philadelphia. In 1984 he was selected to anchor WABC radios new all talk format as its afternoon drive show host. Bob's radio shows were always entertaining and passionate. Along the way he interviewed countless political leaders and celebrities and inspired a generation of political talk radio hosts now working around the country. Bob lived his life in accordance with one of his radio mantras: "Straight ahead!" He was an unapologetic and fierce supporter of conservative values, the U.S. military, law enforcement, and the nation of Israel. He loved his country, his family, and his Italian heritage, and often spoke on the radio about the many contributions made by Italian-Americans to the United States. He published his memoirs "Let's be Heard" in 1996. That same year he was the recipient of the "Freedom of Speech Award" of the National Association of Radio Talk Show Hosts. In addition to living for many years in Los Angeles and New York City, Mr. Grant also resided in Woodbridge, NJ, Manalapan, NJ, and most recently, Toms River, NJ. Bob was preceded in death by his parents, Pasquale and Mary Gigante; his sister, Gloria Weidling; and his longtime friend and companion, Patricia Carmichael, who died in 2008. Surviving are his sons, Jeff Grant and wife, Eileen of Sun City, AZ and Chris Grant and wife, Deanna of Fallbrook, CA; his daughters, Alisa Mingus of Kalamazoo, MI and Cynthia Gaydosh and husband, Robert of Bridgewater, NJ; eight grandchildren, Myles, Kacie, Nathyn, Andrew, Renee, Lauren, Adam, and Lindsay; two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Ashlyn; his sister, Ann Ryan of Chicago, IL; and his companion, Josephine Saracco of Toms River. Bob was a proud friend of Bill W. for 44 years. A Prayer Service will be held at 10 AM on Saturday, January 11, 2014 at Branchburg Funeral Home, 910 US Highway 202 South, Branchburg, NJ 08876 (908) 526-7638. Viewing hours are Friday, January 10, 2014 from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 PM and Saturday morning from 9 to 10 AM at the funeral home. Committal will be private. Memorial contributions may be made in Bob's memory to the Young America's Foundation, 110 Elden Street, Herndon, VA 20170 or the New York Police and Fire Widows' & Childrens' Benefit Fund, Inc., 767 Fifth Ave., 2614C, New York, NY 10153. www.BranchburgFuneralHome.com

I quoted you so many times. Your historical knowledge is why I was so happy to listen to you on my travels in the NYC area. I just learned of your passing. You and Bernie hopefully have become friends in that big radio station in the sky. You left a legacy that will never be forgotten.

Bob was unique...some would say we all are...He was informed, smart, very funny, without trying...he made predictions that came true...I remember the first time I called him, heard his voice got cold feet & hung up...He knew people could be nice, but he never forgot that not everyone was... Once I called him when he was doing his show outdoors, with a large audience, taking calls...being a WABC frequent caller and fan of him & the other hosts, I called to mellow him...And began singing, *I just called to say I love you*...he was surprised...I could just picture the look on his face..then I spoke of the issue on hand...I wasn't sure he would ever take my calls again...but he did..and was always respectful...I was too...Thinking of you Robert...Bob Grant...affectionately...marie from yonkers.

To whom it may concern: Hi I just wanted to tell you how sorry I am for your loss. My condolences go out to you and your family. Many today question if death ends it all, or what happens to those who die. Titus 1:2 says "[We have the hope] of everlasting life that God, who cannot lie, promised long ago." So we can see that there is victory over death, and surely that something to look forward to. I hope all gets better. Please hang in there and have a nice day.

My sympathy's to Bob's family. I have listened to Bob since his days at WMCA.
What I really loved about him was his candor. As a listener I always felt he believed what he was saying, a rare trait in today's politically correct atmosphere. I also loved his sense of humor. Whether it was using the pouring of a glass of water sound effect while listening to a caller or his statements. Vintage Bob, “Where are you from and HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN IN MY COUNTRY PAL”
Bob was truly a one of a kind. Rest in peace. I will miss you.

I remember listening to Bob Grant when I really got interested in talk radio. He had a big influence on me and now I only listen to talk radio. I was so happy to hear him back a while ago. Funny story, when my daughter was born 25 years ago this month, I was listening to Bob when i was in labor and of course will always remember that day. I was a big fan and will miss him very much!! God bless Bob Grant and his family!!

January 6, 2014
I listened to Bob Grant, and yrs back called on occasion...I remember calling and singing, "I just called to say I love you"...and he half chuckled then asked, "what's on your mind"...I was a fan, as so many I know for yrs. If you wanted someone *right on* listen to Bob. He was intelligent, wise, perceptive, with a good memory. His knowledge was vast, and he shared it, and his opinions of what he liked or disliked. He had a great sense of humor and laugh...and knew that saying "how are you to him" didn't mean he wouldn't be turned on. He was clever. His laughter and sense of humor was the cream on the cake. He called it as it was, and saw it as it was/is...he was fair. Have to be open minded, and he was. He was all the things you would want in a Radio Host. Listen, Laugh, Learn, make your own decisions; but be respectful. The Lord Bless him and his family, those who were close to him, friends, fans who cared deeply, will miss him. We miss him. He was genuine.

I have listened to Bob Grant since his 1970 arrival in NYC. Although his Italian was bad, I always got a big kick when he directed his Italian dialect barbs at some of our most deserving politicians. My late mother Shirley endured many years requiring constant best rest. She would listen to Bob's show almost every day and would occasionally call in. After my mom passed, I contacted Bob and asked if he would mention my mother's name on his Sunday show, which he graciously complied and for which I am eternally grateful. May his family be comforted by the knowledge that Bob Grant inspired countless people to keep their minds open. Despite Bob's outward gruffness, longtime listeners knew of his compassionate heart. G-d rest your soul Bob.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. Bob was well loved and valued by his family, his friends, and his fans. I found Bob's obituary very interesting and candid. It makes me long for a time when all citizens on earth will have to acknowledge that "God is not partial, but in every nation the man that fears him and works righteousness is acceptable to him." [Acts 10:34-35]. Until then, hold on to fond memories of Bob, and remember that he is precious in God's eyes.

Most people never got to see the "nice" side of Bob Grant. When he was at the wake of Sam Perelli (founder of United Taxpayers of NJ), with the help of Paul O'Keefe, Bob Made so many individuals in the room feel important by the work they had done at the local levels of government.

Of course we all know how entertaining Bob was. At a fundraising breakfast for the UTNJ, he had the audience doubled over with laughter as he explained the difference between a gavone and a scumbariche.

We will all miss him on the air as he urged all of us to get involved by saying "Your influence counts, use it"
