SAMUEL BRAVERMAN Obituary

Samuel Braverman, 102, longtime resident of Scottsdale, AZ since 1983 and former resident of Chicago, IL, died March 26, 2012 surrounded by his immediate family. He is survived by his wife, Pearl of 72 years; two daughters, Marcia (Doniger) and Donna (Knopf); grandchildren, Scott (Doniger) and Michelle (Long); great-granddaughter, Erica; and sons-in-law, Jay Doniger and William Knopf. He was born March 15, 1910 in Trestine, Poland. He is preceded in death by his twin brother, Joseph; and sisters, Rebecca and Dorothy. He and his brother came to the United States, by themselves, in 1926 (16 years of age) where they lived with relatives in Shawnee, OK, New Jersey and finally Chicago, IL. As did many people of his generation, he worked very hard all his life to achieve the American Dream of a loving family and a successful business. During his long business career, he owned many businesses, but one, Braverman's Cafeteria Restaurant, received local and national recognition as the place "where the corned beef came through the rye." Braverman's trademark Corned Beef sandwich was a truly iconic Chicago delicacy. In 1966 he was honored by being on the cover of the Chicago Sun-Times Midwest Magazine, which featured Braverman's. A private service was held in Scottsdale, AZ. Memorial donations may be sent to the American Cancer Society.

I was raised in Chicago. I am 63 now and live in California. I started the first deli in an industrial park in 1974 in Santa Clara Ca. I styled it after Bravermans. I built 10 of these delis. I now own an events planning co. Www.panettascatering.com
I owe my beginning to just being a customer at Bravermans. Glenn Nelson, Campbell Ca.

Dear Mrs. Braverman and all Family ~

I send comfort and love on the passing of a man I never had the pleasure of meeting but whom my parents knew as loyal patrons of Braverman's Cafeteria/Restaurant. They thought the world of Sam and Joseph, whose names were always mentioned with such respect, appreciation and affection in our home. Mom and Dad were touched beyond telling that Sam visited me and them in the hospital when I was born. It remained a cherished family memory. It is plain to see that the Braverman Brothers' American Dream lives on in the hearts and minds of those who so appreciated their exceptional entrepreneurship. Once more, comfort and love to all the family.

I was a regular customer at the restaurant in the late 1960's and on one ocasion Sam met me at O'Hare airport with a large box of corned beef sandwiches that I delivered a doctor friend of his in Seattle or Portland. I don't remember which. Sam was not only a good friend, but also a very good restanteur in that he knew what it took to be successful. John Shure [Buckley, IL]

Dear Mrs Braverman and family,
Please accept my sincere sympathy and condolences on the loss of your beloved husband Samuel.
In the early 1940s, my mother would take me and my two younger sisters to shop at Goldblatts and the corner dime store. In nice weather, we walked the nine blocks from Iowa St and Oakley Blvd. After shopping, she would treat us to lunch at the famous BRAVERMANS. All of these years and I could never forget the experience.
The "good old days" that that my
Tuley High School friends and I still talk about.
They are long-gone, but not our memories.

IOur family had hundreds of meals there,We grew up in that neighborhood. My sincerest condolences to the family, most especially to his wife.
