Samuel Weiss Obituary

Samuel Weiss, MD, a prominent Chicago psychiatrist and child psychoanalyst, died December 27, 2020, at age 97 after a nine-day valiant battle with COVID at Glenbrook Hospital. Vital and full of life, Dr. Weiss was still treating a handful of longtime patients and mentoring an analyst in training. He served several terms on the Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute board and a one-year term as President of the Chicago Psychoanalytic Society from 1991-1992. Only a few weeks before his death, he was guest lecturer for the CPI zoom class "Working with Parents." In February 1943, this Jewish boy from Brownsville, Brooklyn was drafted into the U.S. Army and attended various universities via the GI Bill. He received his medical degree in 1948 from the University of Illinois College of Medicine, completed his internship at Michael Reese Hospital and Medical Center, and psychiatry residency at Michael Reese Psychosomatic & Psychiatric Institute, prior to starting private practice in June 1952. Shortly after marrying the love of his life Judith Speiser on May 17, 1953, they shipped off to Port Deposit, Md., where Dr. Weiss served two years in the U.S. Navy as the base psychiatrist. Dr. Weiss was a wine and chocolate connoisseur, passionate art collector, voracious reader, avid photographer, lifelong member of the Art Institute of Chicago, and a season ticket subscriber and patron of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. He was a witty raconteur who enchanted his family, friends, and colleagues with an amazing talent for creative storytelling. Within the corners of each person's private and public canvas lies his or her masterpiece. A Lincolnwood resident since 1959, Dr. Weiss is survived by his private masterpiece - beloved wife of 67 years Judy, daughters Debra, Betsy (Jeff Swim), and Janet (Steve Merola), and three grandchildren, Samantha, Katie, Danny. Services and interment private.

Dr. Weiss, whom I knew as Sam, was my analytic supervisor for one of my adult cases, and he was a superb teacher and mentor, the best I ever had. He was one of the brightest, most resonant people I have known, and I often remember his wise counsel. I can imagine how much he will be missed. Blessings on his memory.

Hello Weiss Family! I have such fond memories of many many Thanksgiving gatherings with you and Sam. I am so sorry for your loss. Sam had such a wonderful, full life! I always loved his interest in such a multitude of things. Even recently, he left me a message on a Facebook post- he was always able to stay current or ahead of any technology and was such an accomplished photographer. May his memory ALWAYS be a blessing. Love to you all and especially to Judy! I came across one of her phenomenal holiday cards with an original photograph. I hope you all realize how fortunate you were to have him for so many years! Miss my mom and dad always and only wish they could have lived this long. Hope all is well and stay safe.
