SCOTT OVERBEY Obituary

Scott A. Overbey, 47, of Elkhart, IN and Chicago Ridge, IL, died Saturday, July 16, 2011, after a brief illness. He is survived by his wife, Patti; and daughter, Danielle; his parents, Larry and Mary; his sister, Pattie (and Herb Peters); his sister, Amey (and Charles Betts); and brother, Eric (and Brenda Overbey); and many nieces and nephews. Scott, an accomplished racer in his youth, is honored as being part of the International Kart Federation Hall of Fame. As a go kart racer, he was an 11 time Grand National Champion in various chassis and engine classes from 1974 up to his retirement from go kart racing in 1982. In 1984 he was the SCCA Sports 2000 Pro Champion. In his life after racing, Scott worked as a General Contractor in Chicago, Fort Myers, F l, and other places across the country that had challenging projects. He worked at Axis Products, Inc. in Elkhart, IN, as a manufacturing engineer until his illness. He was married in 1989 to Patti (Dimaggio) and has a daughter, Danielle who was the love of his life. Never one to sit and watch life go by, Scott lived every second of every minute of every day...his way. Never to be ignored, he lived life on his terms until his last day. He leaves behind him family and friends from all over the country and enough stories to write ten books. Scott was a beloved son, father, husband, brother, and friend who will be dearly missed. Memorial Visitation Saturday, July 23, from 2 p.m. until time of service 5:30 p.m., at the R obert J. Sheehy & Sons Funeral Home, 9000 W. 151st Street, Orland Park, IL. Scott was my uncle, although I didn't know him very well he was always funny at reunions, loveable in the pastime, and a good man at death. I am often told I have similar features to him facial, body, and just tone of voice. Many stories are exchanged among Scott, some rumors and some true, but no matter who knew him, they knew he had a racer's heart. I, along with many others will forever miss Scott Overbey, the father, son, brother, husband, and uncle.

Scott was a part of our lives from the beginning. We grew up with Scott, and like the entire Overbey family, Scott was part of our family. We traveled together, worked together and enjoyed many of life's journeys together.

Scott lived life to the fullest and left his stamp on all of his activities. He did not walk through life quietly. We loved and will miss him. Our heart goes out to the entire extended Overbey family. Our fond memories of Scott will bring a smile in our hearts forever.

I am sorry to hear about Scott. I started listing all the good memories of Scott from our travels to the tracks (even though it was some 35 years ago) and there are just so many fond memories and stories each better than the last it could fill one of those books. Again to the entire family I am sorry for your loss and you are in my thoughts and prayers.

I grew up cheering Scott on at Road America. Scott came to visit me and my partner (Steve Knapp who raced with Scott) a few summers ago. His spirit and wit were the same as they were in the 80's. I have never giggled so hard as when I was with Scott. I have many memories and stories of Scott that I will forever cherish.
My prayers go out to the entire family and I hope to someday meet his daughter and share stories about her vibrant father. All our prayers and wishes from Elkhart Lake, WI. The entire Siebken's family sends their love.

Patti, Danielle, and Overbey Family-

We are terribly sorry for your loss. We are praying for all of you.

As I reflect on Scott, besides the energetic personality, I just keep thinking....He was just always so nice to me...making sure everything was going well, keeping an eye on me, and always ready with a quip or story. He treated Sherrie the same way.

Through the years, I was lucky enough to spend time with Scott--family parties, golfing, a race or two, riding the Sea-doos, and so on. On more than one outing with Eric and him, when we settled into relax over a beer or a meal, Scott would lean back and say:

"I am right where I want to be," with a big old grin on his face.

To this day, I am not sure if it is how he said it or the grin, but it resonated with me. A simple, honest declaration that indicated he was relaxed, and he was glad you were with him.

My kids, wife, and brothers have heard me repeat that saying for years, while camping and vacationing. Whenever I say it, I think of Scott.

God Bless,
Brian, Sherrie, Brooke, and Brady Everett

We met Scott in August on 2009. We were looking to have our condo remodeled in Fort Myers beach and got his name from our realtor friend. To make a long story short, along comes this skinny, well dressed guy and after spending an hour with him, and his ever present energy, we decided to choose him for the job. Over the coming months Scotty and I became good friends. I had the chance to work with him on the project and even live with him for weeks at a time. I learned many things and I can say I've never met a harder, smarter working guy and someone with all around talent than my buddy Scott. He told me stories of going to Daytona with his family, his racing days, and he would always stop what he was doing when his daughter called. Everything he did he did with an energy that few can match. Last time I saw Scotty was April 17th, We finally had the opportunity to play some golf that we had talked about for the last couple years and I learned one more thing...he was a terrible putter. I suppose with all that energy inside its tough to stand still over the ball. We had a great time that day and I will always remember Scott with fun and fond memories. I know we will miss Scott as I'm sure many will. RIP Scott.

I always knew he loved me, and he always knew I loved him. That comforts me. He lived 17,311 days and he lived ALL of THEM! I will miss him terribly. He taught me a lot. Some, the right way and some, the way not to do it but he influenced 40 years of my life. I believe in the big plan. It was part of the plan to allow me to spend the last year of his life with him everyday. This past year was a huge gift to me and one I will cherish. The stories that I will remember, the experiences that we shared, and the "live every day" attitude will be a part of me forever. Thank you big brother, I would do it all over again. I love you.

I met Scott at the Beached whale, Ft Myers Beach on my 50th birthday in 2003. There was no ignoring this guy!! We became fast friends. Over the years he did many remodel jobs for my Real Estate clients. He was an excellent craftsman, hardworking, talented and always did a great job. He was doing some extensive remodeling on my own house, as he got ready to paint the ext. he called and said Michelle, you can't use that lousy color on this house,I said what? ( I had bought all the paint already and it was mixed wrong),it was a mauve color and he "refused" to put it on my house.. He soon became friends will all my friends and before long eveyone knew Scott!! He had a larger than life personality..Funniest, sharp witted, never met a stranger, gave all waitresses a hard time.. He will be sadly missed in Ft Myers as I am sure he will be in Chicago.. God Rest his soul and may the Lord comfort his family..We love you Scott!! Michelle Freiburger
