I just spoke to someone who needs back surgery. My thoughts immediately went to the Physician that did my surgery in the early 2000's at St Michael's. I looked up Dr. Block on google so I could pass on his contact information and was devastated to learn of his passing. That I remember Dr. Block and his great skill and friendly conversation twenty years on is a genuine tribute to him. After reading many of the tributes it is clear that he helped a lot of people and was a great Father. I remember reading in Milwaukee Magazine that he was one of their Top Physicians. He certainly was a Top Physician to me.

Even after all these years that have passed, I still fondly think of Dr. Block and how much he meant to me. I have to say that he was one of the BEST physicians I have ever had. I so wish he was still among us; we lost on of the best the day he passed. To Dr. Block's family; I just want to let you know that I appreciate very much that you shared him with all of his patients. There has been an empty spot in my heart since the day I heard of his passing. His service was attended my many, my self and my husband included. It is such a great testament of how much he was respected and appreciated. I'll always miss you Dr. Block; you truly were one of the best. Fondly missed and thought of.

To say I was shocked today to learn of Dr. Block's passing 2-1/2 years ago is an understatement. He literally saved my son's life in 2004, at midnight on July 6. My son had a massive sinus infection, which had been previously misdiagnosed, and had migrated to the meninges. Dr. Block performed emergency surgery at 2 a.m. He was quite blunt, but I couldn't blame him at that hour. My son recovered fully due to Dr. Block's skillful hands and compassion, and I will forever be thankful I chose to transport my son to St. Mike's that night. Although very belated, I would like to express my heartfelt condolences to Dr. Block's family.

I just found out today when I went for my yearly checkup with my primary Dr., that Dr. Block had passed away last May. I was in shock. He did my back surgery in 1996 and I have been great since. He always took his time and talked to me to make sure I understood exactly what was going on and what needed to be done. Now knowing that I can never go back to him for my back is very sad. RIP Dr. Block. You will never be forgotten!

I just found out today that Dr. Block has passes away, I'm very sad to hear of this, he was a great doctor to me. he put hardware in my next and I was able to play my beloved softball, I was just to see him a few months back and I told him I finally retired from play the game I love and he told me to get back out there and play just like him, he loved baseball he use to tell me about when he went to Brewers training camp he just loved it, my heart goes out to his wife and kids he will be truly missed God Bless.

I was a patient of Dr. Block and I am so saddened by the loss. He was a wonderful caring person and a great doctor. He removed my hardware from my back in 2011 and did a wonderful job! Everytime I had a doctors appointment with him he would take his time with me and explain things and always told me that he would get to the bottom of my chronic back pain. I am so shocked I just found out I have been in Puerto Rico I am sad and my heart goes out to the family. I went to dr block for a second opinion. He got right to the problem and wanted to fix it he was so concern I had a three disc fusion already from another ortho surgeon but wanted a neuro surgeon opinion well he had test done on me and saw on cat scan another heriated disc in my neck and possibly non fusion to my disc. He told me he could make me 95% better by fusing the disc. I wanted time to think I have been and am in Puerto Rico I am so sad and shock. Dr block told me to think about it and now he is gone. I just heard about the passing of Dr. Block today and I still can't believe it. In January 2012, I was referred to Dr. Block. Upon our first meeting he was all business and quite intimidating. I know right. He had me come into his office at St. Luke's hospital and explained to me that I had a very serious condition that needed immediate attention. As he was explaining things to me in a way that I could understand, tears began to stream down my face but he assured me that I would be ok. On the day of the surgery, there was a bit of a problem getting a line started. It took two anesthesiologists to get it going in my chest. As I screamed in pain, Dr. Block came running into the room screaming for the two anesthesiologists to stop and this time he had the tears streaming down. I will never forget that. That's when I knew what a loving, caring man he was and that he wouldn't let anything bad happen to me. Today, I am 100% and I have him to thank for this new outlook. I feel lost and like I lost something very valuable because Dr. Block is gone. Every time he saw me post surgery he had a big hug and kind words.
Dr. Block, I'll miss you.

My wife and I are in total shock and deeply saddened to learn of the passing of Dr. Block. He changed my life when he performed nothing short of a Miracle on my back with his GOD given abilities. He truly was the best of the best. Our condolences and prayers to his entire family, we are so sorry.

I am deeply saddened to hear of the loss of Dr Block. He was a brilliant surgeon, as well as a truly kind and caring man. My heartfelt condolences to his family, and to his many friends and colleagues. I last saw Dr Block at St Luke's in late December when my wife was hospitalized with a serious illness. He offered kindness and comfort,as always. He was one of God's gifts to the medical community and to our family. He was a true gentleman, and will be greatly missed. God's Blessings

I just heard of the passing of Dr. Spencer Block yesterday. As a retired anesthesiologist, I guess I am out of the loop; but I am very saddened for the loss of such a caring, talented, brilliant neurosurgeon. I had the privilege to know Dr. Block professionally from the Neurology Department at Aurora Sinai and as his patient.11 years ago Dr. Block treated me after a Brain hemorrhage resulting from a head injury. He was very kind and thoughtful. He would come to my hospital room at midnight after working several hours in surgery to check on me.He was the eternal optimist and put my fears to rest.He treated everyone with kindness and respect.I was stunned to hear of his passing. He called me a Rock Star, YOU were the Star Dr. Block !

To the Block Family: May God
Bless and comfort you all during this difficult time. I didn't get the chance to meet Dr. Block, but I was told that he was an amazing and God-fearing physician who cared for his patients. Dr. Block performed my mother's (Vernell) back surgery in November 2012. My mom called Dr. Block her "hero" because he did an AWESOME job with her surgery.
Dr. Block told my mom that he prayed for her and for the success of the surgery; he advised her to do the same thing. My mom and the surgical team prayed before her surgery began; Dr. Block came in and performed a surgery which gave my mom her "life back."
My mom is NOT 100% yet, but I know that she will be someday soon! Before the surgery my mom could NOT walk or stand, but thanks to God and Dr. Block she can do both. I thank God for Dr. Block and I thank Dr. Block for using his gift to make so many people feel better.
Block family, please know that Dr. Block's staff and patients loved him too, take comfort in knowing that he did his "earthly" job to the best of his ability!!

Our most heartfelt sympathies go out to the Block family. Doctor Block had a God given gift, plus he was kind, approachable and quietly hilarious! His sudden loss has stunned us both.
Doctor Block performed two surgeries on my husband last year; lower spine and neck. Before he would operate, he tried other things, to see what would benefit him the most. I will never forget his visit to me in the waiting room after surgery. He sat on the table across from me, his face inches from mine. He spoke very low and soothingly. He told me, "I got a good night's sleep last night, I went to bed early because I knew this was going to be tight." He went on to say, "I came very close to his spinal cord, but I promise you that I did not touch it." He was so very earnest and so sweet, I appreciated him very much!
Doctor Block was always cheerful, no matter what was happening in the office. He would spin the chair around and sit on it backwards, then proceed to ask how things were in Kenosha, was this business still there, had we tried this place or that. We both loved his relaxed, laid back attitude.
I asked him once who he would take his mother to for a certain problem. He assured me I'd never go wrong with this guy, a friend of his, and he was right!
Doctor Block was a man of skill, grace and compassion. I know that we miss him, and he cannot be replaced.

I had the pleasure of having Dr. Block as my neurosurgeon for the past 13 years due to the fact that I had a brain tumor. He performed the biopsy to determine what type of cancer it was. He also directed me to other fine physicians who treated me without surgery, underwent radiation with a chemo pill, and thankfully it worked and I am now cancer-free. I truly believe God sent Dr. Block to me. He helped save my life. I know in my heart there is a special place in heaven where Dr. Block is comforting others. God Bless.....

I was very fortunate to know Dr Block for 7 years he did my cervical sponge surgery in 2006. He helped me get rid of some of my pain. I've signed the guest book already, but if it's not too forward what was the cause of Dr. Block's passing? He was so young. He did 3 surgeries on my back and neck and the first one was my very first surgery 5 months before my 50th birthday. Very scared (and painful) but Dr. Block did an excellent job, I enjoyed going for checkups!! Packer fan vs. Bears fan!!! I am truly going to miss him and now who do we turn to, I was going to make an appointment soon too. I'm at a loss as I'm sure everyone else is.

I only knew Dr Block for a short period of time, but that was during the toughest period of my life. He gave me hope and helped me overcome my pain and for that my family and I are forever grateful. Dr Block left an impact on me not only for healing me physically but for the kind and joyful person that I will always remember him as. Ill always remember sharing baseball stories with Dr. Seems we spent more time in the office talking baseball than health, but I never cared cause I enjoyed his stories so much. Dr. Block did my husband's back surgery in Jan. The first time I met him I was immediately impressed with his lack of "the god complex, his casual demeanor, his friendliness and his ability to give medical information in layman terms. I felt Jeff was in good hands.
He talked about Alexis and her dancing at UP and I loved that. He loved his daughter. I also was a Sparkette at Indiana State U 40 years ago and I loved it.
This community and the medical community has lost a great doctor and a wonderful man. Jeff and I are privileged to have known him.

I don't know anything about Dr. Block but I do remember Spencer as a nice kid. It's been at least 40 years plus, but I remember we both won beach towels at a jeans store on Devon Avenue. I can't remember what I had for lunch, but I keep that as a nice childhood memory. Very sorry for your loss Nancy and family.

I had one of the greatest jobs, I was lucky enough to work with Dr. Block when he came to St. Lukes. He always treated the staff as he wanted to be treated. He was kind, caring and funny. He would always say, "what are the three most important things in the OR; Patient safety, patient safety, patient safety". I will miss his "Time outs", he could be heard down the hall. It truly was a pleasure to have known him, and I know he will be missed by all that had the privilege to know him.

Dr. Block was my college for nearly 14 years. I also have had the pleasure to be his patient twice, and am currently a little over two months post-op from his care. Though I wish with all my heart I could have completed my care under him, perhaps there is some comfort in knowing that I will never be released from his care again. I will always be his patient. I chose him as my surgeon based on his incredible humility and exceptional character. I'm an illustrator - The photo I attached is of the poster I made for him some years ago. Robin, Lexie & Josh, it belongs to you now, but I never got to know where it ended up, so I hope its locatable. I wish you all the comfort, peace, and graces possible that The Almighty can give, and may you be comforted among all the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss. I am a worker's compensation attorney in Milwaukee who had the privilege of representing many of Dr. Block's patients. He was a fine physician, surgeon and person. He was extremely helpful and supportive of his patients and was an exceptional advocate to his patients when their WC claims were denied. Spencer was a wonderful person, when we first met he tried to fix our broken TV and couldn't but it showed how much he cared, he didn't know us too well, since we were friends of Robin's but he wanted to help us! To the Family Block. Aside from being a hard working surgeon and loyal Alphatec user, Dr. Block taught me quite a few things. Always hold your cards close to the vest, know your opponent well and always keep them guessing with good humor. He was the first surgeon to ask for my CV (resume), first surgeon to set me up in a conversation, always referred to me respectfully as Ms. Cook, never sent an email without a natural good wish like a blessed Thanksgiving or a happy New Year, and he only electronically ‘yelled' at me when I would email him twice about the same thing – his response was always the same ‘I was kinda busy implanting Alphatec hardware!' But I always had a hard time picturing him rocking out to his favorite music in an OR – 80's! Well, rock on Dr. Block! You gave a lot of people relief from back pain, a lot of love to your wife and children who you valued most (you told me so), and you gave us a lot to think about when making a better product and working with surgeons. I hope everyone in the family finds that perfect place in your heart where Dr. Block, Spencer, dad, will live. His words and love will carry on – hug each other a lot. Lisa Marie

Dr. Block was a wonderful man and very caring doctor. He operated on my husband last July and did a wonderful job. Not only did he take wonderful care of my husband but he was also very caring with me. He made it a point to explain everything to me and try to ease my fears. With a heavy heart, we send our most heartfelt condolences to Dr Blocks family. Dr Block will be missed dearly by our family. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

I am saddened about Spencer's sudden death and my heart goes out to Robin, the kids, Spencer's father and sister. He was one of a kind and will be truly missed. So sorry that we fell out of touch over the years but during my time at U of M and ZBT, Spencer was a true friend and brother. Funny, clever, loyal and smart. I don't think any of us ever figured out how he could tear those phone books in half. Miss you buddy!

Deepest sympathies to the Block family. We had the privilege of working with some of Dr. Block's patients. I've personally met Dr. Block and have witnessed the compassion and care he gives to those under his care.

Dr. Block worked on my back twice. I remember he would look @ me and ask me how I was feeling. His eyes would look right through me. I could see his caring and compassion come out of him. He truly cared. He would exhaust all efforts before he wanted to do surgery. He practiced @ a hospital I work for and I would see him on the floors here and there. He would rush on over and hug me and say that I look like I am losing weight. Truth is I never was, he just said that to make me feel good, that was Dr. Block . The community has lost a true Giver. I pray for all his family and friends.

I was shocked and am saddened by
Dr. Block's sudden and untimely death.
As a neurologist I started to interact with him in patient care soon after his move to Milwaukee. I was truly taken in by his professionalism that I saw in his dealings with his patients and collegues. In my humble opinion he was one of the best neurosurgeons in the city. Whenever I referred a patient to him I knew that the patient was in good hands and would be well taken care off. Every patient that was mutual to us had nothing but good things to say of him.
We all will truly miss him as a person
and an excellent physician.

To the family of Dr. Spencer Block, I am sorry for your lost. This is a lost to all, Dr. Block performed my back surgery this past November 2012. Before and after surgery. Dr. Block and I prayed together, took away any fears I had prior to surgery. I always. addressed Dr. Block as my hero, he would respond with no you are the hero. Dr. Block will be truly misses. The world has lost a hero , but he will not be forgottened.

I was very saddened to learn about Spencer's untimely passing. I too was a fraternity brother of Spencer's at the University of Michigan. We lived together in the ZBT house and had great times with great memories. Spencer was a bright, kind and unique individual. After reading many of the warm tributes, I certainly have come to the conclusion that Spencer made a huge impact on many lives. May the entire Block family accept my sincere condolences - Spencer will be greatly missed.

Dr. Block always impressed me with his skills as a physician as well as his compassion and sense of humor. He was very informative and reassuring after my mother's surgery and at each appointment. He also remembered details from past conversations which made us all feel that he was always truly listening. His bedside manner was exceptional and made his patients feel lucky to be in his care. We trusted him completely and I know this was not unique to our family. His passing is a great loss to his family and the medical community.

When 3 other doctors, could not help my mom I went to Dr. Block's appointment and was so impressed at how much he cared for mom. His third surgery worked as the others doctors did not. She is out of pain, her legs are working again and actually she started driving again a feat I could have only dreamed. I cannot tell the Block family how indepted I am to Dr. Block for his kindness, skills and giving me my mom back. The family is in our prayers
