Stephen SWEIG

Stephen Sweig, beloved husband of Karen (nee Otahal) of Phoenix, Arizona (formally from Chicago, IL), passed away on Monday, January 30, 2017 at the age of 74 years. Stephen held a Master of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering in Fluid Mechanics from the University of New Mexico - Sandia National Laboratories, Albuquerque, NM, and an M.B.A. and B.S.M.E. from the Illinois Institute of Technology, Chicago, IL. In 1986, Stephen was granted a U.S. Patent for a "Method for Double-Side Thermoforming". Stephen was Chief Engineer of Profile Plastics Corporation, Lake Bluff, IL since 1987. His participation in the plastics industry began in 1974. The Society of Plastic Engineers Thermoforming division named him its 2002 Thermoformer of the Year. His background included several years as a rocket scientist. After completing his first Master's Degree in 1967, Stephen joined Sandia National Laboratories in Albuquerque, NM, as Staff Engineer. At Sandia Labs he performed parametric tests of civilian high-altitude ballistic rockets and designed and field tested military ordnance. While at Sandia Labs he completed his second Master's Degree and co-authored two technical publications on military ordinance. He was very dedicated to his work, and mentoring those who were looking for guidance in the industry. Stephen will be deeply missed by his wife Karen; three beautiful daughters Gerriann (Rudy), Suzann (Michael), and Marciann (Billy); brother Mitchel (Linda); seven grandchildren; one great-grandson; beloved dog Winnie, as well as lifelong friends and industry companions. Stephen was predeceased by his father Albert Sweig, and mother Eve Sweig. Chapel service will be held at 12:15 PM, Monday, February 6, at Shalom Memorial Funeral Home, 1700 W.
