I hold two memories of Steve most dear. The first was of his generous charity on behalf of shelter animals. His dog balls, if you will, held at his studio, with donations entitling the giver to a photo portrait of their pet were such a fine example of his kind and loving spirit. His portrait of my dog, Winston captured all of his canine beauty and dignity. The photo is a cherished gift of Steves exceptional talent. The second memory was of a random visit to his studio one afternoon. Steve and his father were sitting together on a couch bathed in light from a window, talking. I wasnt eavesdropping, but I was struck by the mutual love and respect that they so obviously shared with each other. It was just beautiful. I hold that image in my minds eye still. Steve was a very special human being.

I met Steve about eight years ago through a mutual friend.
He was always very nice to me and generously shared with me his love for movies.
He never really spoke to me about his professional success - he had great humility.
I'm very glad that I had a chance to know him.
My heartfelt condolences to Andrea and the Grubman Family.
My thoughts and prayers are with all of you.

I remember working with Steve on the design for his first photo studio in an old Chicago warehouse building, in the early 1970's. So I knew him when he sported that fabulous dark moustache - I remember that moustache as if it were yesterday. He could have easily been mistaken for Corky Siegel of the Segal Schwall Blues Band. I was Howie's friend and Steve was someone that I looked up to - easy going, with good judgment, motivated and thoughtful. He even helped me in my search for my first apartment in Rogers Park. His goodness is not forgotten.

Our deepest sympathy to Andrea, Josh, Natalie, Erica, Carolyn and all of Steve's family and friends. I had the pleasure and honor of working with Steve during the Montgomery Ward years. As well as being an excellent photographer, he as always a kind and generous man that was well respected by his peers. Joe and I will always remember the fun wedding party for us, held at his studio and our many laughs over silly labrador retriever stories about our dogs. Steve will live on in our hearts and memories.

Always an intelligent man who lived his life to the fullest

Winston by Steve Grubman

Steve's mom went to puppy kindergarten with me and my dog Winston and immediately pronounced Winston to be Behaviorally Disabled! Years later when Steve was taking Winston's portrait, he would position him, step away, and as soon as he reached for the shutter, Winston would change position. This went on repeatedly and just when Steve gave me the exact same expression of exasperation that his mother had used in that puppy class!, Winston sighed, laid down and Steve took an absolutely regal portrait of my best friend! I think of Steve whenever I see that photo, and am always amazed at just how special a place he has in my heart, then, now and forever more.
