Steven Clark Obituary

Steven Skinner Clark, aka Stevo, Indian, Loft, passed away suddenly and unexpectedly on January 12, 2015 in Chicago. He was 54. Steve was born in Evanston, raised in Glenview, graduating from New Trier West in 1978. Steve went on to earn his B.A. in Zoology from DePauw University in Greencastle, Indiana and his M.S. in Environmental Science from Washington State University in 2003. His diverse professional work as a biologist included rare and sensitive species assessments, biophysical inventories and assessments, and terrestrial and aquatic ecological risk assessments, and mitigation of adverse environmental effects. His work took him throughout British Columbia, the Northwest Territories, and the United States. His blog, only a year old, https://marinewestecology.wordpress.com, represents his passion and love for our planet. As a dear friend put so well, "Steve was committed to deepening our understanding of the important challenges facing life on earth and to enhancing our appreciation of life itself." Steve will be remembered as a creative and sensitive spirit, deep thinker, curious explorer, and truth seeker. He considered all scaled, feathered, and furred creatures his brethren. His sacred space was all that nature presented, both majestic and humble. In his earlier days, he graced the ball field as a gifted athlete playing for New Trier and DePauw. Aside from all things natural, Steve's greatest love was music. A self-taught guitarist who loved jamming with friends and bands, he also wrote his own lyrics and music. Beloved son of Lois Luke Clark and brother and best friend of Kendall Clark, both of The Woodlands, Texas, preceded in death by father Myron Augustus Clark, he remains permanent member of his tribe of close friends known affectionately as "The Ball Club". In the words of one of his musical heroes, we all say, "Fare you well, fare you well. [We] love you more than words can tell." -Grateful Dead, Broke Down Palace. And in his own words, "On the great divide, somewhere on the other side, that is where [I] will reside, that is where [I] will survive." Steve Clark, The Great Divide. Steve, I'll see you and Tico there one day. kc

I only now learned of Indian's passing so sad. I have a lifetime of memories of Stevo as one of my fraternity brothers at DPU. His love for sports and music and life...I smile when I think of him.

Stevo---some fun times in Spanish class---and great times on the field. I have not been in touch over the years, and that is now my real regret. I will touch base on the other side, friend. Thanks for helping nurture the land, and all its creatures. We are all very fortunate to have known you...

I'm a DePauw classmate of Steve's and briefly was a baseball teammate of his. What a great guy with a huge spirit. I'm shocked by this news, and send my deepest condolences to Steve's family and friends. I've uploaded a photo from the DePauw Archives of Steve in action. RIP, friend.

It is with immense sadness and heavy heart that I write this tribute to my beloved friend. Steve was one of those rare souls who made better everything to which he attended. He was an excellent athlete, introspective and kind gentleman and kindred soul. He was smart as a whip and met no learning curve that he could not conquer. I last saw him in September 2014 at a junior high reunion and, although that was the first time in over 20 years I had the privilege of doing so, I felt as if it was 1978 all over again (sans Gregg Sims and John Padgen, of course). I enjoyed reading his recently created blog which provided me with a better of sense of issues and causes near and dear to his heart. In retrospect, I was blessed to spend that September Saturday evening with him and so many other friends ruminating about the past.

I will never forget Steve, and my deepest condolences are sent to everybody, and there were many, many, who knew and loved him. May he rest in eternal peace.
