Thomas Soper Obituary

Soper, M.D., Thomas E. 49, died August 6, 2012, in a diving accident near his home in Minocqua, Wisconsin. Tommy was born in Evanston, Illinois on April 9, 1963, to Thomas G. and Julie K. Soper. He graduated from Evanston Township High School in 1981 and from Kalamazoo College, Michigan, with a BA in Psychology. He earned his medical degree from the American University of the Caribbean- School of Medicine. After obtaining licensure in Wisconsin, he worked at the Peter Christensen Health Center in Lac du Flambeau, Wisconsin, as a staff physician. In addition to helping the patients he cared for, he greatly enjoyed teaching them about their conditions so that they could take greater personal responsibility for their own health care management. Tommy was known for his ability to accomplish anything he set his mind to, particularly as it related to mechanical projects. At an early age he was able to take apart and rebuild an automobile engine. One of his favorite projects was to completely rebuild an old 911 Porsche. Tommy had a contagious optimism and love of life. He had a passion for the outdoors and his time in the Minocqua area allowed him to enjoy many of his favorite activities including waterskiing, snowmobiling, snow skiing and fishing. He is survived by his father, Thomas G. (Joan) Soper, M.D., Evanston, Il.; his sister, Carolyn (Charles) Stearns; his nephews Charlie and Stephen and his niece Katie, Wilmette, Il.; his brother Stephen L. Soper, Evanston, Il.; as well as loving aunts, uncles, cousins and a host of friends, colleagues and patients. He was preceded in death by his mother, Julie Soper. Dear Tom, Sorry to learn about your son. Decades ago you performed several succesful surgeries that extended the life of my mother, Amy Kuhn, at Evanston Hospital. I still remember visiting your very nice house on, I think, Sheridan Road when we were going to ETHS. Anyhow, very sorry for your loss but hope you are well and coping. All the best, Al Kuhn

I was a relatively new patient of Dr.Soper, Tom. I was so pleased to find such a caring physician who would take the time to call me with a follow up or to take all the time I needed for questions or suggestions. I just learned of his untimely passing and I extend to you my deepest sympathy. In the short time I knew him, I valued him not only as a doctor but as a friend.

I just read about Tom's accident. I was a year ahead of Tom at ETHS and while I didn't know him very well, you could not truly have attended that school and not known Tom. Even with nearly 4,000 students, and even being a grade apart, Tom's energy and enthusiasm was there for everyone to see. My memories of Tom are exactly that ... a guy who made sure he enjoyed life and his friends around him. It makes it hard to believe his life was taken so soon. To his family, I wish you my heartfelt condolences.
