William Moore Obituary

William J. Moore (1922-2017), devoted husband, father and grandfather, passed away peacefully and surrounded by family members on February 22, 2017 in Evanston after a brief illness at the age of 94. Born in Chicago, "Bill", to his family and friends, grew up on the North Shore and graduated from Highland Park High School. He attended Amherst College for a year before the outbreak of World War II. A member of the "Greatest Generation," he joined the Army, serving with distinction as a weatherman on aircraft based in the Pacific theater. After the war, he graduated from Northwestern University in 1946, received a law degree from Chicago - Kent College of Law and a CPA from University of Illinois. In 1949, he married the love of his life, Doris Kiernan Moore. Bill spent his entire career as a successful businessman and entrepreneur in Chicago, owning several small companies in the Midwest. In mid-career, he pioneered international trade in Chicago, helping Midwestern manufacturers export products around the world. He traveled to every corner of the globe-from Taiwan to Africa to Peru - exporting Lastindustrial equipment. As result of his success, he was awarded letters of commendation from the U.S. Department of Commerce. He did not retire until his late seventies. He lived in Winnetka for 55 years before moving with his wife to the Three Crowns Park independent living facility in Evanston. An active golfer and tennis player, Bill was a longtime member first of Exmoor Country Club and then Indian Hill Country Club. In 1963, he was a member of the Exmoor rink that won the Illinois state curling championship. A season-ticket holder for five decades, he loved spending autumn afternoons watching his beloved Northwestern Wildcats football team, especially those "Cardiac 'Cats" and their improbable, last-minute victories. And he finally saw the Chicago Cubs win a World Series. But nothing was more important to Bill than his family, whether it was playing touch football in the street, raucous restaurant dinners and more than 60 years of Christmases with every family member present. He was an extraordinarily generous philanthropist, donating to such causes as the Catholic Church, Northwestern University, Misericordia, Alzheimer's Association and dozens of other educational and social welfare causes. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Doris K. Moore, his children W. John (Andrea) Moore, Susan (Robert) Klawitter, David Moore, Stephen (Anne) Moore and Kathryn (Robert) Dodd; nine grandchildren, Natalie and Rebecca Moore, Eric and Jenna Klawitter, Justin, William and David Moore, Cameron and Stacy Dodd; his niece Lynn (Gary) Peterson and nephew Gordon (Jo Marie) Pirie. He was predeceased by his sister, Patricia (the late Curtis) Eastman. A Funeral Mass was held on Tuesday, February 28, 2017 at 10:00 a.m. at Saints Faith, Hope & Charity Church, 191 Linden Street, Winnetka, IL 60093. Interment was Private at All Saints Cemetery. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to: Three Crowns Foundation - Employee Scholarships, 2323 McDaniels Avenue. Evanston, IL 60201. Info: www.donnellanfuneral.com or (847) 675-1990.
