Winifred Duffy

1935 - 2014

Winifred Duffy (nee¿ Monahan), a proud wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend went home to God on Thursday, December 11, 2014 after a long battle with Alzheimer's Disease. Winnie was born in County Kilkenny, Ireland in 1935 to Seamus Monahan, the town's mayor, and his wife, Bridget. The Monahans were a large, tight-knit family of loving siblings: Kay, Sean, Jim, Eileen, Maura, Michael, Breda, Phylis, and Paddy. Winnie had remarkable courage. At 19, she set sail for America living with her paternal aunt and uncle, Dell and Martin Gibbons, near her other aunt and uncle, Mary and John Fleming. The Gibbons and Fleming's remained Winnie's loving family here in Chicago. Winnie eventually married the love of her life, John Duffy. Married for 43 years, John and Winnie had three children Michael (Monica), Maura and Katherine (Jessica) and four grandchildren (Jack, Lucia, Leif and Atticus). Winnie is survived by many nephews and nieces, cousins and friends in Ireland, the United Kingdom, Australia, Spain and America. Visitation on Monday, December 15, 2014 from 3-9 at Smith-Corcoran Funeral Home, 6150 N. Cicero Ave., Chicago, IL. Prayers at 9:30 on Tuesday, December 16, 2014 from Smith- Corcoran to Queen of All Saints Basilica, 6280 N. Sauganash, Chicago, IL for Mass at 10:00 am. Interment in All Saints Cemetery.
