EVERETTE DDS Obituary

EVERETTE JACKSON MALLORY, DDS He was born January 29, 1924 in Boulder, CO to Glen & Lena Mallory. In 1927, "Jack" moved with his family to Long Beach, CA. He and his siblings, Joy & Bernie enjoyed their childhood days and attended Long Beach Academy. 1937 found the family moving north to Paso Robles, where his parents, administrative nurses, established Mallory Hospital. During these years, he attended and graduated from Paso High at the young age of 16. His education continued at Pacific Union College in Angwin, CA. After preparatory studies, Jack entered the School of Dentistry at The College of Physicians & Surgeons in San Francisco. He completed his Dental Degree in 1945, the youngest in his class at age 21. While studying Dentistry, Jack met and fell in love with his beautiful and gracious, Thelma Oettel. They were married June 29, 1944. Immediately upon graduating Dental School, he enlisted in the US Navy. At the conclusion of WWII, high demand remained for Navy dentists to serve abroad. In 1946, Jack shipped out to Japan, leaving his bride. He served as a dental prosthetics officer at a hospital near Sugamo Prison, where Hideki Tojo, Prime Minister of Japan, was held for War Crimes as the 'master mind' behind the attack of Pearl Harbor. Jack made an upper denture for Tojo while stationed there. This experience included a dental prank on the imprisoned Tojo that years later resulted in world-wide attention. Details can be read in Google search topic: 'Tojo Dentures'. With Tour of Duty over in 1947, Jack and Thelma moved to Paradise, CA, where he began his dental practice. He soon moved his office to nearby Chico, where he served the greater community for many years. He enjoyed having his brother, Bernie establish a dental practice in the adjoining office. Jack loved nature. While raising their family of five children, his adventurous spirit resulted in many excursions for family and friends. Trips were always on the horizon in what he eagerly referred to as 'Anticipatory Time'. Some included back-packing, snow skiing, dune buggy adventures, North and Central American road trips. He especially loved the mountains. If he saw it, he wanted to climb. Summits reached were Shasta, Whitney, Banner Peak, Lyle, Agassiz and more. If there was a body of water, he wanted to dive in, even if it meant through ice. His love of the mountains and snow skiing kept him on the slopes to the age of 88 with a "senior ski free" pass. He was a world traveler, enjoying trips with close friends to numerous foreign countries, making lifelong international friends. Jack held a strong faith in God and for many years was an active member of the Paradise Seventh-day Adventist Church and later Neighborhood Church of Chico. In recent years, he enjoyed attending Bidwell Presbyterian Church. He loved to sing and enjoyed church choir participation. He was a faithful witness to the saving grace of his Lord Jesus Christ. Jack devoted nearly two decades of his life caring for Thelma in her late years with Alzheimer's disease. His dedication and loving care were constant until her passing in 2009, a testimony of committed love rarely seen. Drawn together by the simultaneous loss of spouses, Jack and Gerry Eastman developed a strong bond of support and affection. Her humor and nurturing spirit were endearing aspects of their shared commitment to one another. Jack is preceded in death by his wife, Thelma; his sister, Joy Halstead. He is survived and loved by his dear, Gerry Eastman of Chico; his brother, Bernie Mallory of Paradise; five children, Barry Mallory (Margie) Cold Springs, CA, Wendy Pruett (Richard), Butte Valley, CA, Paul Mallory (Janet) Chico, Lori Eckhart (Eric) Chico, and Jill Theriault (Bruce) Butte Valley, CA; seven grandchildren, Heath Pruett, Summer Price, Haily Pruett, Jordan Mallory, Brook Albanis, Molly Alexander and Elise Theriault; seven great-grandchildren and his eighth due in July, all of whom loved and will miss their 'Papa Jack' forever. Jack was a family friend and I babysat for his and Thelma's children (whom I adored) when I was young. Later, he gave me my very first job, teaching me to be a dental assistant! i enjoyed skiing with him long ago. When I broke my arm on a hike when I was about 12 years old, he carried me part way and helped me home. He was one of my very favorite people growing up! That was long ago, I wish I could have seen him in his later life. RIP to Jack and Thelma, and my best to their children.

Jack was my dentist in my youth. His love of life was an inspiration and he was a strong role model. W6EVP mobile from the early fifties will always be a fond memory along with his Johnson Ranger and SX-42 which was the station that facilitated my first 15M QSO. 73 and Godspeed Jack.

Jack you have been a great brother. I miss you and my grief is double at this time with Hazel leaving also. I am so pleased to have had the long phone chat with you the night before you left us. How often we talked of things only you and I knew. Now you have left it all with me. I love you brother. See you soon. Bernie

What a beloved and loving man. He enriched the lives of us all and he will be sorely missed by all of us! Until we meet again, Jack. . .

He left a legacy of caring and being kind to others. Jack cared about others in a way that was something to copy. I will miss his wisdom and connection.

Dr. Mallory was my very first dentist. I remember his smile, laughter, and caring spirit. I loved all the kid stuff in his waiting room. Especially the biblical stories with beautiful illustrations. I remember the photos of Jackson Hole and the Sawtooth Mountains that he put on the wall of the exam room. I decided then and there I had to go! So far I have been twice! Great memories of a great man!
