Francis McDonald Obituary

"SKIP" MCDONALD Francis "Skip" McDonald, 90, of Chico passed away on the morning of May 4th 2017 in his home surrounded by his family. Skip was born in Los Flores, Ca to Roderrick and Teresa McDonald. Here he grew up with a love for sports and the outdoors. He attended Red Bluff High School in 1940-1944 where he was an outstanding athlete in both football and baseball. After high school Skip enlisted in the U.S. Navy for two years, and returned to Chico to attend Chico State University. There he excelled in football, basketball, and baseball; which was his true love and talent. His love for the game, took him to play for the Chico Colts as well as the "old" semi-professional team the Orland Tigers, and was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies. Skip chose to pursue a teaching career over playing pro ball. He obtained his teaching credential, while participating in athletics throughout his college career. While attending Chico State he met his wife Virginia Elizabeth Jenkins, and the two wed in 1951; and were married for 34 years. Skip began his teaching career at Trinity High School, in Weaverville, Ca and was hired in 1953 to begin teaching and coaching at Chico Senior High School. Skip had a love for athletics, and a passion for teaching; in the classroom, on the field and in life. He was a man of few, but noteworthy words. He expected 100% and gave 100% at all times. He was known for the twinkle in his eye and mischievous smile. He was a man of many clich‚s when coaching and former athletes use them still to this day. Throughout his career at Chico High School he coached several successful teams in football, basketball and baseball. He served as the Athletic Director at Chico High from 1977-1988. During the summer months he assisted and help organize The Chico Area Recreation Districts Bush League baseball for youth 7-12 years old. Skip has been recognized for his dedication to the athletic community, his coaching as well as his athletic talent. He has been inducted into the following hall of fames: Chico Sports Hall of Fame (1979), Chico State Athletics Hall of Fame (1987), Northern California Old-Timers Sports Association Hall of Fame (1987), Legends of the Diamond (2006) and The Chico High School Foundation renamed the Varsity baseball field, in his honor He loved spending time outdoors, including hunting, fishing and camping. He enjoyed these moments, especially when spent with his family and close friends. His love for fishing at Eagle Lake and Lake Almanor have been shared with many. One of his fondest memories to share was a fishing trip to Alaska with his son Dan. Skip is survived by four of his children; Terri Wallick, Patrick McDonald, Jeaner Kassel (John), and Dan McDonald. His grandchildren; Jordan Kassel (Jessica), Nick Kassel (Cassandra), Maddie Kassel, Daniel "D.J." McDonald, and Kinsey McDonald. He is preceded in death by his wife Virginia, son Michael, brothers Jim and Angus and parents Rodderick and Teresa and his long time special friend Madeline Sauer. Viewing will be held Wednesday, May 10, 2017 from 6:45 to 7:30 p.m. with a Vigil service beginning at 7:30 at St John the Baptist Catholic Church. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held the following day at 10:30 a.m. also at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Brusie Funeral Home. Sincere Condolence to the family of Skip, especially brothers Angus & Jim. Our family lived across the street from the McDonald family for years in Las Flores. My sister (Genevieve) was very good friends with "the boys". Lots of memories.
