Howard Francis Holman IV

Howard Holman Obituary

Howard Francis Holman IV was born on Feb. 27, 1970, in Corning, Calif. to Howard (Pete) and Jan Holman.

He attended Durham Schools from kindergarten through high school (1975-1988), graduating as valedictorian of his senior class. In 1992 he graduated from California State University, Chico with a B.A. in English. He received a Technical Writing Certificate in 1992, a Secondary Teaching Credential in English in 1993, and a Master of Arts in English in 1998.

A published author, Howard tutored children and adults in English composition, report writing, math, algebra, geometry and trigonometry. By his example and the high expectations he demanded his students set for themselves, he had a profound influence on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him. He was honored with the Durham Exchange Club's "Exemplary Service Award" in 2002 and was nominated by his community to carry the Olympic Torch in January, 2002. His leg of the run occurred in Mill Valley.

Howard passed away on Friday, Aug. 26, 2005, at the UCSF Medical Center in San Francisco from complications of Muscular Dystrophy.

He is survived by his parents, his brother Greg Holman and his wife DeAnna of Durham, his brother Mike of Salem, Ore., two nieces and a nephew and an extended family of aunts, uncles and cousins.

A Celebration of Life will be held at the Durham Memorial Hall on Saturday, Oct. 15th at 10 AM. For those who wish to do so, donations can be made to the Howard F. Holman IV Scholarship Fund (to be awarded to deserving students) at the Tri Counties Bank, P.O. Box 190, Durham, CA. 95938 or to the Durham Volunteer Fire Department. All who knew Howard are encouraged to write their thoughts down for inclusion in a memory book being assembled for Howard's nieces and nephew.

I was watching an early episode of Star Trek - Voyager today which reminded me of when I was staying with the Holman family in Durham, CA.
I recalled watching the same episode with Howard as I tried to record it for my friends in AU, this was around 1996/97.
Howard was very strong and resilient living with muscular dystrophy and he never lost his sense of humour. Howard was also a big Simpsons fan, hence his sense of humour. We also had many discussions about politics, both in USA and in Australia and the merits and attributes of both countries.

I was privileged to know Howard and now, though very belatedly and courtesy of the advent of the Internet I now wish to pass on my condolences to the Holman family.

I am so saddened to hear of Howards passing through my brother just 2 days ago. My heartfelt sympathy goes out ot The Holman family. My thoughts and prayers are with the Holman family. I did attend DHS from 1985-1989, and have nothing but admirable memories of Howard.

I was saddened today to hear about Howard's passing. My memories of Howard were when we were members of 4-H in Durham. He never seemed to be down on anything even though he had struggles at that time. Best wishes to the Howard family you will be in our families prayers. He will be remembered.

WHAT can't I say about Howard. I played second chair to his first in Trombone for the most of 8 years? Howard taught me so much, and encouraged me to exert myself in everything I did. We participated in Academic Decathlon together, created the first and only Volleyball Prep Squad for the Durham Girls, and played a lot of "cards" with Brian before band in the morning. While we grew apart after high school, only due to a lack of classes together I'm sure, I still think of Howard when drafting my letters at work.

Howard, an inspiration to sooo many, and a leader of not just the community - you will be missed, and remembered well.

Thank you for all you did, and continue to do. Jan, Howard, Mike, and Greg - my deepest sympathy to you and your family.

Dear Holman Family,

I can't tell you how sorry I am to hear about Howard. I don't have very many memories (both fond and frustrating :)) from our years at DES and DHS that he isn’t a part of. I am sure that he would have something to say about that grammar, but I am so sad to lose such a dear childhood friend that he will have to “cut me some slack” today. Please accept my most heartfelt sympathies for your loss.

I have fond memories of Howard from attending the Durham Schools. He and his family have always been an encouragement to me. Although I didn't know Howard well, I always saw his smile and kindness towards others. Greg, please know that you and your family are in my prayers.

To the Holman Family;

Our hearts go out to you. We have had the priviledge of knowing Greg for over 10 years now, as he coached our oldest son, Jeff, in basketball. We would've loved to have known Howard as well, you have such a wonderful family. God bless you during this time, you will be in our thoughts and prayers.
