Marvin Chapin Obituary

MARVIN CHAPIN Marvin (Spider) Chapin, 79, died May 15, 2015, in Aurora, CO. He was born in Oakland, CA on January 14, 1936 to Mickey and Eda Chapin (both deceased). He is survived by sisters Lois Wilson, of Denver and Judy Herring of Dublin, CA. Son Tony (Alta) and their children Alex and Austin of Aurora, CO. and son Chris (Mary) and their children Nick, Jack and C.J. of Larkspur, CO. and cousins Gary Chase and Sheila Englund of Chico. Marv attended school in Oakland and Placerville, before moving to Chico in 1949; where he attend-ed Chico High School, graduating in 1954. He joined the US Marines with a group of Chico buddies, Bob Jones, LeRoy Merlo and others. He served his country in Japan and Okinawa, and was honorably discharged in 1957. A picture of Marv was featured on the front page of the STARS AND STRIPES carrying a 35 lb. radio on his back after a 21 mile "forced march." After his discharge, he moved to Sacramento where he ran into Barbara (Babs) Blankenship, a girl from Chico. They married in 1957. Barbara passed away in 1987. Marv was employed by Liggett & Myers for 30 years before retiring in Denver, as their Western area Manager. In 2013, Marv returned to Chico, joining the Elks Club and SIRS #84. Because of failing health, he moved back to Colorado to live with his son Tony and family. An excellent fisherman and hunter, he loved the outdoors. Marv was a quiet but friendly and fun person, loved by all who knew him. At his request, there will be no services.

THIS MAY BE A DUPLICATE.

I HAVE TRIED TO LOCATE MARV THRU FACE BOOK AND OTHER WAYS FOR YEARS. I ONLY KNEW HE WAS FROM CHICO. MY NAME IS JOHN W JUNKMAN, [email protected]. MARV AND I MET IN THE MARINE CORPS IN 1954 AND WERE BEST OF FRIENDS IN JAPAN. MARV WAS ALWAYS SO UP BEAT AND SUCH A MORALE BOOSTER. MOST OF US REALLY KNEW HIM AS SPIDER. WE WERE RADIO OPERATORS IN THE SAME COMPANY. SOME PLACE I HAVE PICTURES OF SPIDER IN JAPAN. WE TRAVELED TO OKINAWA , SOME ISLANDS I DON'T REMEMBER AND WE SPENT 30 DAYS ON IWO JIMA IN EARLY 56. I AM VERY SHOCKED AND SADDENED TO HEAR OF HIS DEATH. HE WAS A GREAT GUY.
