Thomas Enloe Obituary

THOMAS SCHRAM

ENLOE, SR., M.D.

Thomas Schram Enloe, Sr., M.D., passed away peacefully on July 13, 2008, at his son's home in Hanford, CA, after a long battle with lung cancer. He was 85 years old. Thomas was born on January 12, 1923, to Dr. Newton Thomas and Dorothy Enloe in Chico, CA.

Thomas graduated from Chico Senior High School in 1940 and Stanford University in 1944. He obtained his medical degree from Stanford School of Medicine in 1947 and returned to Chico to work with his father practicing General and Emergency medicine. He served in the Air Force during the Korean War being stationed in Japan. Upon returning to the United States, he entered into an orthopaedic residency in San Francisco and subsequently returned to Chico to practice medicine.

Thomas was an active member in his community. He held memberships to the Rotary (past president) and Shriner's Clubs, the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, Chico School Board, and many other community organizations. He was very proud of being a Founding Trustee of Butte Community College.

Dr. Enloe served as Hospital Administrator and Board of Trustee member at Enloe Hospital. He was also instrumental in establishing Enloe Hospital as a non-profit organization to allow it to better serve the needs of the community. He served as public health officer for Butte County, and helped develop and write the grant for the California Comprehensive Health Plan.

Thomas retired in 1975, and with his wife, Barbara, followed their dream to sail throughout the south sea islands to Asia.

Thomas was predeceased by his wife, Barbara, in 2005, and half-brother, Newton Thomas Enloe, Jr., in 1946. He is survived by his four children, daughter, Christine Enloe Kollwitz (husband, Mike); daughter, Gayle Enloe (husband, Jose Brotons); son, Thomas S. Enloe, Jr., M.D. (wife, Kathy); and son, John Michael Enloe (wife, Mellanie); his six grandchildren, Jose, Miguel, Teresa, Gregory, Chelsea and Christopher; and his two sisters, Nancy A. Hodges and Ida M. King.

Thomas lived a full, adventurous life giving service as a doctor, contributing to his community, and sailing the world. He set a standard of honor and courage that was truly respected. We have all learned from his spirit which will live on in the lives of all who knew and loved him. He will be greatly missed.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, August 9, 2008, from 2:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m., at the Enloe Conference Center located at 1528 Esplanade, Chico, California.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Enloe Foundation for the Enloe Century Project (530-332-4550) or Butte College Foundation (530-895-2351). Condolences for the family can be sent to: [email protected].
