Wayne Cook Obituary

WAYNE ALLEN COOK Wayne Allen Cook,79, of Chico died June 20, 2022 in Lake Almanor, CA after losing his battle with Cancer. Wayne Cook's life was defined by passion, courage, generosity and his love for Chico. Wayne was born in Enloe Hospital on December 17, 1942 to Andrew Jackson and Edith Effie Cook. His parents were small farmers and his father was the railroad station master in Durham for many decades. Wayne is preceded in death by his sisters; Virginia (Cook) Stanton, and Karen (Cook) Nielsen. Wayne is survived by his spouse Carol Helen Cook, siblings; Vernon Cook, Carol Cook, Christine Chaney, and his three daughters; Alisa Cook-Scott, Angela Cook-Jones, and Annette Cook-Wagenman, and 5 grandchildren. Wayne is a legend as a wrestler at Chico State and was a 4-time Western Conference Heavy Weight Wrestling Champion, earning him a spot in the CSU Hall of Fame. In lieu of flowers, Wayne would have loved to know contributions on his behalf be made to Durham Wrestling Program at (530) 519-2313. The family would like to give our sincere thanks to Dr. Mandy Robertson and her staff at the Chico Cancer Center, Chico Hospice Care and Sierra Hospice Care. Wayne's generosity in large and small ways was one of his defining characteristics, although he never sought recognition for it. He helped numerous individuals and organizations financially. Wayne's family and community was his greatest motivators in life. His presents will be greatly missed, but not forgotten. Graveside service will be held on Saturday, July 30th, 2022 at 10 a.m. at Glen Oaks Memorial Park, 11115 Midway, Chico CA. All are welcome.

I just learned of Wayne's passing. Oh what wonderful memories of Wayne and Carol and Suzie Anderson. I worked for Wayne at Birr Wilson and Company in Oroville in the early 1980's. When Wayne left Oroville to restore Chico often because my husband and I had an antique lamp business. When Wayne bought the Language Houses he asked my husband to do all the lighting in the houses and because I made Victorian Shades he purchased several of those over the years for some of the houses that he restored. We remained close for several years but sadly lost touch after we moved to Idaho. This news really saddened me. Am so grateful to have known him. Thank you Wayne.

A friend of mine told me today the Miller Mansion fell thru escrow. I immediately thought of Wayne's energy to restore it, then my thoughts went on and on. Those were the days downtown, the 70's and 80's. I can picture you sitting on a stool smoking a cigar outside of The Oaks in the hallway. I came here in 1974 to go to college and since then I never stopped hearing your name. All the way until when you moved on, with all your work and energy and heart your bestowed to everyone and to this town. Everyone will always remember you, every where we look, with each story we hear.

So sad to hear that Wayne has passed. He gave me a job doing projects around his house which led to me going to work for a local carpenter in Chico that led to me putting myself through college. It all started with Wayne. A truly wonderful person and friend.

Wayne was a classmate 3 years ahead of me at Durham. He and his business partner John Luallen dated my sister. He showed up in his 1922 Dodge lowboy hot rod roadster with a hot V8 motor. Wayne was a real MAN among Butte County men who made a dynamic imprint on Chico's history. He started early with the sorority and fraternity houses of CSUC and got federal monies for their restoration under designations of national landmarks. He did dozens of restorations around the city and owned the Diamond Hotel and was working to complete the restoration of the Morehead Building on Broadway. The Chico Heritage Foundation finally honored him the week before his passing. Wayne and his main restoration partner John Luallen both exuded integrity, tenancity, intent, and honesty in all their dealings. Wayne's sister was a good friend and in my classes at Durham. She passed away at a very young age. Wayne was truly a national treasure in his architectural works.
