MERRILLAN -- Charles E. Gumness, 65, formerly of Bloomer, passed away Saturday, April 30, 2005, in Jackson County.
He was born Aug. 11, 1939, in Bloomer, to Emil and Reva (Downey) Gumness. He served in the U.S. Marine Corps in Beruit, Lebanon from 1957 to 1960. He worked as a railroad engineer for Chicago Northwestern and retired from Canadian National Railroad.
He was a member of the Merrillan United Methodist Church where he sang in the choir and served on the Board of Trustees. He was also a member of the Merrillan Masonic Lodge and the Alma Center VFW Post 8494, where he served as quartermaster. He was recently elected to the Merrillan Village Board.
He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, eating jalapeno peppers and spending time with family and friends. Charles ever-ready smile and willingness to help others will be greatly missed.
He is survived by: son, Charles (Jean) of Eau Claire; daughter, Vicki (Todd) Buchner of Bloomer; special friend, Donna Jennings of Hixton; three brothers, Paul (Cindy) Gumness of Bloomer, Robert Gumness of Missoula, Mont. and Dale (Maryann) Gumness of Bloomer; five sisters, Margaret Wyman of Madison, Patricia (Garry) Loew of Bloomer, Diane (Al) Froiland of Eau Claire, Jane (Paul) Blum of Bloomer and Norma (Chris) Meinen of Bloomer; four grandchildren, Rebecca and Rachel Gumness, Heather Clements and Samantha Buchner; and former wife, Cecelia (Rada) Amodt of Chetek.
He was preceded in death by: his parents; and brother, Kenneth.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 5 at the United Methodist Church in Bloomer with Rev. Meg Harrison officiating. Interment will be in the Bloomer City Cemetery with military graveside rites performed by the Alma Center VFW.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. on Wednesday at the Olson Funeral Home in Bloomer and one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
