David E. Tonnancour, Sr., of Lake Holcombe, passed away Thursday, Sept. 6 at the Dunn County Care Center.
David was born Aug. 22, 1930, to Elmer and Myrtle Tonnancour in the township of Birch Creek in Holcombe. He graduated from Holcombe High School. David enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps in 1950, serving in the Korean Conflict. He married Dorothy (Pat) Rasmussen of Ladysmith on Dec. 5, 1950.
Upon his discharge from the Marines, Dave and Pat returned home to their family. They resided in Ladysmith for a few years. Dave and Pat moved to Buffalo Grove, Ill., where Dave worked as an operating engineer for 35 years. Retirement brought them back to their roots and the place they both loved so much – Lake Holcombe.
Dave and Pat celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in 2000. They so enjoyed their retirement years, spending time together and with friends they treasured. Of course, they were avid Packer fans. After Pat's death in 2001, David found solace in those friends and liked spending time on the lake and walking, and watching the Packers.
He is survived by: three children, Dave (Deb) Tonnancour, Jr., Dan (Jeanne) Tonnancour, both of Holcombe, and Diana (Dave) Owens of Trevor, Wis.; and his daughter-in-law, Trisha Tonnancour of Orange, Va. He was also the proud grandfather of seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
David was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Pat, and his son, William "Bill" Tonnancour. Also preceding him were: his parents, Elmer and Myrtle; brother, Leonard (Doc) Tonnancour; and sister, Mavis Rodriguez.
Memorial services will be held Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 4 p.m. at the Borton-Leiser Funeral Home in Cornell, with Fr. Peter Manickam officiating. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Military honors will be conducted by the Cornell American Legion at the Cornell Cemetery following the memorial service.
The family would like to extend their gratitude to Dr. Erik Dickson and Angie Pratt, RN of the Marshfield Clinic Cornell Center for their tireless efforts in finding David a home when we could no longer care for him. Further thanks to the Amery Regional Medical Center, Alzheimer's Unit, and to the Dunn County Health Care Center for accepting David into their facilities during his time of need.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer's Association.
