Larry Hanley

Larry Hanley, M.D., age 89 passed peacefully on November 26, 2024 with family by his side in Indianapolis, IN.
Larry was born on September 30, 1935 near Portland, IN to L. Keith and Caroline M. Hanley. He was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Marjorie L. Hanley; wife of 46 years, Borgny; sons, Kim and Thomas Haugle and granddaughter Leah Hanley. He is survived by children, Cynthia Hanley Koeppel (Steve), Cheryl Zimmerman (Bradlee), Terry Hanley (Dawn), Garry Hanley (Tammy), Gwen Hanley (John), Lisa Hanley, Terry Haugle (Claudia), Kristi Olson (Keith), Kari Jean Kelly, Jason Haugle (Kathleen); 24 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and sister, Wilma Bohn (Alan).
Larry graduated from Gaston High School in Gaston, IN. He earned a B.A. degree from Indiana University College of Arts and Sciences and an M.D. degree from Indiana University School of Medicine; received his Internship and General Practice training at Methodist Hospital of Indiana Indianapolis.
Larry felt called to become a physician at an early age. During his lifetime he continued to heed that call to serve through a career as a family physician and in academic family medicine. His career included General Practice in Whitehall, WI, Family Practices with the Krohn Clinic in Black River Falls, WI, with the Putnam Heights Clinic in Eau Claire, WI and in Chippewa Falls, WI. He helped develop, establish and direct the Eau Claire Family Practice Residency Program, in Eau Claire, WI. His career in Academic medicine included being on the faculty and Director of the Montgomery County Medical Education Foundation Family Practice Residency Program in Conroe, TX, the Department of Family Practice and Community Medicine at the University of Texas Houston, and Director of the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences AHEC Fort Smith Family Practice Residency Program in Fort Smith, AR.
Dr. Hanley was a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society, a Diplomate of the American Board of Family Practice and a Charter Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians. He was a member and active in the AAFP and the AMA and their various state and local chapters, wherever he resided.
Larry was active in local community service, school and church activities throughout his entire life. He was the best grandpa and storyteller to all who would lend an ear. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials or gifts to
your favorite charity or organization. A private service and burial will be held at Holden Lutheran Church, Colfax, WI.
