Claudia Rosett-Wilson Obituary

CLAUDIA A. ROSETT-WILSON Claudia A. Rosett-Wilson (1955-2023) passed away peacefully at home after a long illness. She was a truly exceptional lady with of formidable intellect, enormous innate curiosity, and vast determination. She led a remarkable life, travelling to all parts of the planet in pursuit of true investigative journalism. Despite her natural modesty and desire for privacy at home and in her local area, she reported on many major historic moments and wrote many defining editorials, (both signed and unsigned), large numbers of opinion pieces and front page stories for the Wall Street Journal (WSJ). She was the Opinion Page Editor of the Asian WSJ (based in Hong Kong for six years). the Bureau Chief in Moscow (for four years) and a member of the WSJ Editorial Board. Claudia was the only major U.S. print reporter present during the Chinese Tiananmen Square protests in 1989 (running through Chinese Army automatic weapons fire to file her story). She was the lead reporter of the Russian invasion of Chechnya and Boris Yeltsin's shelling of the Moscow "White House". Claudia led in the reporting of the North Korean labor camps in Russian (where she found that North Korean laborers paid bribes to be sent to Siberia because living conditions were better than at home in North Korea). She also led in revealing the massive, world-wide leadership corruption of the UN Oil-for-Food scandal and the Chinese destruction of democracy in Hong Kong. Claudia Rosett won many journalism awards, including an Overseas Press Club award for her reporting from Tiananmen; many felt that only politics prevented her from receiving a Pulitzer Prize for her reporting of the U.N. Oil-for-Food scandal. Claudia's skills were the product of her great intellect and her unusual background. She was the daughter of a classical economist and a gifted and animated mother. Claudia graduated at 16 from Brighton High School in Rochester, N.Y. and spent a gap year in Holland, learning fluent Dutch and working as an aide in a home for the mentally less able. She was also one of the first women to go to Yale (which she said she enjoyed due to the 40:1 ration of men to women) where she graduated with a degree in English. She then got a master's degree in English at Columbia and an MBA from Chicago School of Business. After schooling, Claudia set her sights on working at the WSJ, a goal she achieved by writing a response to criticism of a Dr. Seuss book in Dr. Seuss style rhyme, thus securing a post as assistant books editor at the Journal. Claudia Wilson was learned, well read, brave, a wonderful wordsmith in the English language and a lover of poetry. She was driven to reveal the world as it was and was the bane of tyrants and corruption worldwide. In her private life she was generous, candid and loving. Those who knew her well found her a constant source of inspired comment. The world is a poorer place with her passing and to her many friends, she is irreplaceable. Contributions in her name are invited to the Wilmot Cancer Institute at the University of Rochester Medical Center in Rochester NY. Claudia and I shared a bedroom from the time I was born until she left to go to Yale. During the years when we shared a bedroom in the house onWinton Road I woke up one night because she was talking. She recited the entire Robert Frost poem "The Road Not taken" and when she finished I commented that I liked that poem very much. She did not respond. I looked at her more closely and realized that she was asleep. She recited that entire poem, perfectly, in her sleep. Then she went on to live that poem.

Claudia and I shared a bedroom for many years. One night when we were both in our teens I was wakened by her voice. She was reciting a poem written by Robert Frost: "The Road Not Taken". When she finished I made a comment, but she did not respond. I looked at her and realized that she was asleep. She had recited that poem, perfectly, in her sleep. And then she went on to live that poem.

Claudia was a formidable intellect and a wonderfully bright spirit. Nothing was better than discovering that you were seated next to Claudia at dinner. It meant an evening ahead of surprising information, warm conversation, and lasting memories.

Claudia, you will be missed by all who respected your ideas, your determination to find the truth, and your warmth and goodness. Betsy McCaughey

We will forever remember Claudia's spirit (both congenial and fearless), her amazing intellect, and her curiosity. Sitting on the porch as we assessed both the lake-front and the world overall, Elaine and I enjoyed every minute of our time with Claudia and my dear friend Tim (who saved my life in Iraq). Whether it was listening to her recite poetry or simply riding shot-gun as we cruised across Keuka Lake, we never had to search for a reason to smile. Our relaxed bodies were betrayed by the level of underlying neural activity (and wit) she brought to every conversation. We join the throng who will dearly miss this treasure.

Dearest Claudia, I vividly remember the call I received from you the night of June 4th from Beijing, with skids of machine gun shooting in the back ground, asking for my husband. But he was in China as well. Since the review of the "Son of the Revolution ", you both had been working on so many ideas together for so many years, never waver in your faith and belief! Never submit to evil, lies or political correctness! Bravery and honesty are your greatest qualities both intellectually and in real life! You had a sharp mind and also a sharp pen! You were afraid of nothing, nor were you fooled by anything! As a friend, you were so warm, caring, and were lots of fun! Remember the fight to get our dear friend out of a Chinese prison?! Remember walking out the met museum on Park Ave with you and my husband reciting poetry together?! Remember the exciting boat ride on the peaceful lake in front of your house?! Claudia, how can you leave us now?! This world still needs you, your wit, your words, your courage to tell the truth and say what is right! We will miss you dearly! May you rest in peace!

Oh, no, no, no. Claudia started our Tolkien book club so many years ago ... She was a wonderful friend and inspiring colleague. This is so hard. Sending love and hugs to Martha. I wish there were something I could do to help. RIP and know you were very, very special.
