Karen L. Harrell, 84, passed away peacefully on November 10, 2025, in Marion.
Born on December 5, 1940, in Marion to William and Margaret (Wiley) Frantz, Karen was a proud graduate of Marion High School, Class of 1958. She went on to pursue her passion for caring for others by attending Parkview Hospital Nursing School, where she earned her nursing degree.
Karen dedicated her professional life to healthcare, beginning her career with Dr. Dunbar before spending many years working alongside Dr. Jesche until her retirement. She found great joy and fulfillment in her work – especially in caring for babies and young people – and remained committed to helping others throughout her life.
Karen married Ronald E. Harrell on February 11, 1967 and she shared a devoted and loving partnership until his passing on August 12, 2023. Together they raised three sons, Leonard D. (Nyoka) Harrell, Robert W. (Liza) Harrell and Alex J. "A.J." (Tori) Harrell. She is also survived by her siblings, David Frantz and Susan Miller; four grandchildren.
Karen had a vibrant spirit and a deep love for home and family. She expressed herself through crafting – always creating something beautiful – and took great pride in decorating for every holiday. Christmas held a special place in her heart; each year she transformed her home with multiple themed trees that brought her great joy.
Karen found peace outdoors and was known for keeping immaculate flower beds – never letting a weed go unnoticed. She also enjoyed collecting elephants, indulging in delicious desserts, and cheering on the Colts, Pacers, and Indiana University teams. Above all else, Karen will be remembered as a devoted wife, mother, sister, grandmother, nurse, and friend whose kindness and creativity left a lasting impression on everyone.
