Michael Kirkpatrick Obituary

Michael D. Kirkpatrick, 70, of Morgantown, W.Va., died suddenly on Wednesday, May 8, 2024, at his home.

Mike was born on November 22, 1953 in Marion, Ind., to the late Marylin and Virgil Kirkpatrick. Both skilled educators, they instilled in their son an ethic of civic engagement and the importance of honesty, integrity, and dedicated public service. This led him to Purdue University, where he earned a bachelor's degree in industrial management. He was a proud member of the Farmhouse Fraternity and served as the chapter president his senior year. Later, Mike earned his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) credentials, which catapulted his career from the Indianapolis Ernst & Ernst office to the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

Kansas City was Mike's first assignment with the bureau. While there, he met Lawrence, Kan., native Sally Llewellyn. They married on January 31, 1981, then criss-crossed the country as Mike rose through the FBI ranks. His assignments brought them to Cleveland, Ohio, Washington, D.C., San Antonio, Texas, Pocatello, Idaho, and New Orleans, La. Mike retired from his final assignment in Clarksburg, WV on August 31, 2004 as the FBI's most senior Assistant Director, having served as Assistant Director in Charge of the FBI's Criminal Justice Information Services (CJIS) Division.

After retiring from the FBI, he enjoyed a variety of professional pursuits, including consulting, private investigation, and forensic accounting. Mike also threw himself into community service through the Cheat Lake Rotary and the Fraternal Order of Police, where he held many elected positions. During his time as Rotary District 7530 Governor from 2015 to 2016, he traveled to every Rotary club in northern West Virginia.

Over the course of Mike's life, his exceptional service and leadership were recognized with many honors and awards.

Mike is survived by his loving wife Sally of Morgantown, W.Va.; children Cmdr. Justin Kirkpatrick and wife Lauren of Virginia Beach, Va., and Megan Van Etten and husband Todd of Arlington, Va.; and granddaughters Morgan Belle Kirkpatrick of Virginia Beach, Va., and Parker and Holly Van Etten of Arlington, Va.

In accordance with Mike's wishes, cremation services will be provided by Hastings Funeral Home in Morgantown, W.Va., and a Celebration of Life will take place at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Morgantown, W.Va., on June 8 at 3 p.m. with Pastor Tony Setley.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Rotary Club of Cheat Lake, St. Paul Lutheran Church, or another civic organization that is close to your heart.

Dear Sally, Megan, and Justin I am so sorry for your Loss.

I was most fortunate to work with Mike In the Criminal Justice Information Services Division (CJIS) of the FBI.

Mike followed me in all 3 of the positions I held at CJIS.
The FBI and I personally benefited from his vision, leadership, and many other talents.
Mike's problem solving skills and focus on getting the job done were invaluable
in resolving numerous National Justice Information Management Issues.

I truly appreciated and enjoyed our professional association in CJIS ,but more important our trust and friendship that continued after retirement.

I was proud to have played a role in his promotions in CJIS.
Mike did an incredible job under very difficult circumstances in a very complex and demanding division and set a new standard for his successor
.
I always appreciated his dedication to the CJIS Mission ,but what always impressed me most about Mike and set him apart from many other executives was that he never forgot where he came from, his common sense, fairness, and most important of all, his treatment and genuine concern for the well-being of others.

Mike was most fortunate to have the Love and Support off Sally, Megan, and Justin throughout his career and I know he considered his Wonderful Family His Greatest Achievement.

MAY HE REST IN PEACE

Mike and All of You remain in my Thoughts and Prayers

Love And Blessings

Mike was one of the truly Good Guys! We went through the Madison-Grant School system together graduating in1972. He was always a great person, outstanding student and one of the best people you could hope to have as a friend! I have so many great memories of those years together! I always admired his employment with the FBI and knew they had chosen wisely in hiring him. He will be missed but not forgotten! Prayers for his Wife and his Family.

Mike was my Big Brother in FarmHouse at Purdue and as our house President, Mike spoke at my pledge class´s initiation to the fraternity. He loved FarmHouse and talked about how proud he was of our class because it contained his only "Little Brother"! He and I had a very special relationship. Mike was a very serious student - his grades reflected it - but also had a wonderful, dry sense of humor that he didn´t always show. He was hugely respected by all of his fraternity brothers, as evidenced by being elected chapter President his Senior year. Being his Little Bro, I was able to get to know him better than most, and always felt I was able to say something to either make him laugh or even embarrass him even when he was trying to remain in his serious side! After graduation, we lost touch with each other, but I kept track of his career. When my oldest daughter Christina went to Purdue, she became involved in Purdue´s "Old Masters" program, which annually honors past graduates that have achieved remarkable success in their post grad careers. I remember her asking me if I knew anyone from my years at Purdue that might fit that criteria, and knowing Mike´s success with the FBI, I immediately thought of him. We were able to reconnect and Mike was chosen to come back and be honored during Purdue´s Old Masters week. My wife Cheryl and I returned as well to attend the closing banquet and it was great to see Mike again and meet his beautiful wife Sally. We took up right where we left off, & I was even able to share a few stories with Sally that had Mike´s face red with embarrassment! Mike was a huge influence on my life and someone I will always remember with tremendous respect, admiration and affection. I am so very sorry to learn of his passing and offer my prayers to Sally and the rest of his family.
Sincerely,
Morris (Moe) Jackson
