R. Lee Brown, 78, of Bloomington, Indiana, died on Tuesday, November 7, 2023. Lee was born in Marion, Indiana on July 12, 1945, son of the late Chester Lee and Alberta (Trueman) Brown. Due to the death of his father at the age of two, Lee's grandparents, Lee and Russell Brown and Dewey and Mable Trueman played a significant role in his life. Lee attended Marion High School and was a 1963 graduate of Greenfield High School. During high school, Lee won three National Championships in national roller-skating competitions in New York, Illinois, and Michigan.
Lee graduated from Indiana University in 1968 and also received his Master's Degree in Secondary Education in 1971 from Indiana University. At I.U., Lee was a member of Sigma Chi Social Fraternity, the Singing Hoosiers, the Indiana Student Foundation Little 500 Steering Committee, and Blue Key Honorary. In 1985 he received his Secondary Administration Certificate from Ball State University. Lee proudly served his country in the Army, winning Soldier of the Year and Outstanding Soldier awards during basic training at Fort Knox, KY and touring in a US Army Variety Show for three months.
During his 17 years of teaching history at Marion High School in Marion, Lee was voted National Honor Society Teacher of the Year on three different occasions. Lee spent eight years in Hammond as an Assistant Principal and five years as a Principal at Lowell High School. He was also actively involved in theater at Marion High School, Marion Community Theater, Bear Creek Farms and in Orlando's Walt Disney World, where he directed a show in Fantasyland. Lee also enjoyed politics, reading, college basketball, and playing bridge.
Lee is survived by a half-brother, Jeff Inskeep of Greenfield, Indiana.

Lee was my fraternity brother and roommate. We pulled an all-nighter together before a geography final, which we both aced. Lee was a terrific person. Multi- faceted and talented. Sui generis.

A great teacher and motivator! Lee had a fantastic sense of humor and will be missed by all who knew him. He is still leading the cheer in heaven for old I.U.

I personally did not know Mr. Brown, but I, too, am a Sigma Chi. All honor to your name, Mr. Brown.
May God rest your soul and keep you my brother.
