George Gross Obituary

George (Jarvey, or Grits) Gross. Age: 84. Born September 26, 1933 - May 13, 2018
Jarvey was born in Lonoke, Arkansas to Frederick Eugene Gross and Susie Gross.
Jarvey graduated from Emery Riddle School of Aviation in 1955. He received a football Scholarship to the University of Florida, where he met his wife Betty. They were Married December 15, 1955 and moved to Marathon, Florida in 1956 as a Florida State Conservation Agent. Seven years later they moved to Miami, Florida and remained there until 1973, when they moved their family to Crystal River. Jarvey retired from Florida Power in 1995.
Jarvey loved hunting, fishing, camping, boating and flying. He truly enjoyed spending time at the beach with his children and grandchildren fishing and boating.
Jarvey was a member of Crystal River United Methodist Church; he was a prior CRUMC Boy Scout Master – Troop 307, a prior Lions Club member and Crystal River Yacht Club Member. He loved to volunteer.
Retirement years - one month each year for 15 years Jarvey and Betty would volunteer at the Dry Tortugas National Park on Loggerhead Key. During the same years they would spend several weeks each year in Dayville, Oregon working on a cousins cattle ranch helping with the annual cattle drive. At age 67 they paddled a canoe 550 miles on the Yukon River from Whitehorse to Dawson City, Canada with granddaughter Lisa and friends from Crystal River.
Jarvey was predeceased in death by his parents Frederick Gross & Susie Gross; brother Frederick Gross, Jr.; sisters Betty Billingsley and Suzanne Marks.
He is survived by his wife Betty of 63 years; daughter, Holly Bailey (Chuck), son, Fred Gross (Cindy); granddaughter, Ashley Protheroe (Nathan); great-granddaughter, Bailey; granddaughter Lisa Davis (Matt); great-grandson, Clifford along with many nieces and nephews. Jarvey will be greatly missed.
Services will be held on Saturday May 19, 2018 at 11:00 a.m. at the Crystal River United Methodist Church, with visitation from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. In lieu of flowers, Memorials in memory of George "Jarvey" Gross may be made to Crystal River United Methodist Church. Arrangements are under the direction of Strickland Funeral Home and Crematory, Crystal River.
