Steven Hughes Obituary

Steven Don Hughes, 75 of Inverness, passed away January 19, 2023, peacefully in his home. Don was born November 11, 1947, to the late Frank and Wilda (Payne) Hughes in Knoxville, TN and moved to Inverness in 1953. He was a Presbyterian.

Don served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War earning many awards including the Bronze Star Medal and the Army Commendation Medal. Don was a familiar face in town; as the owner/operator of the Standard Oil/Chevron gas station on Main Street for almost 19 years, Don came to know so many people in the community, and was always there when anyone needed help or advice. Don loved watching football with his sons and especially enjoyed going to Gator games with his son Chris. Don was an avid fisherman; he and his son Greg successfully competed and won in many local fishing tournaments.

Don was also predeceased by five of his sisters; Jonnie Grumbling, Joanne Chamblin, Jeanne Davis, Janice Holinghead and Joyace Swanson.

Left to cherish his memory are his wife of 53 years and best friend, JoAnne Hughes; his sons Christopher (fiancé Lindsey Thomas), and Greg (wife Katie, granddaughters Madeline, Hannah and Charlotte); his sister, Joette Bowsky, and many nieces and nephews, all of Inverness.

The family invites friends to gather on Thursday, January 26, 2023 from 11:00 AM until 12:30 PM. at Chas. E. Davis Funeral Home. Don will be interred with Honors at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, following the visitation. The procession will depart the funeral home at 12:30 PM.

Don was a good friend and will be terribly missed.
We are so sorry that we are out of town and didn't receive word of his passing. All our thoughts and prayers are with the family.

I was in the Citrus High School Bank with Don. He was so sweet. I remember all our band trips together. I was a mascot and 7 years younger than he was. I will never forget his gentle and quiet ways. My prayers are with his family.....RIP

JoAnne.
I enjoyed working with Don for over 30 years. When I got the message, I told Wilma and she was shocked. I would make a point of being at the funeral, but we are in Arkansas at the time. Best regards from both of us. I don't know if Don ever told you but I was in Vietnam also about the same time.

JoAnne and family: I am so saddened to read this about Don. We graduated from Citrus High in 1966 and he was such a kind and fun classmate. Wonderful memories of him! I hope your loving and fun memories will bring y'all peace and comfort during this time.
