Carol Braun Obituary

BRAUN

Carol Joanne Braun (59) passed away peacefully on April 22, 2016 of complications related to angiosarcoma. Carol will be remembered for how she embraced life with enthusiasm and passion, bravely and confidently facing challeges without complaint and serving as an inspiration to countless others. Loving wife to Dr. Charles Flexner and mother of Sara Lindsey (Mike Ciulla), James Flexner (Karen), Bill Flexner (Riah Werner), Chris Flexner (Allison Lucchese). Beloved daughter of the late Dorothy and Fredrick Braun. Dear sister to Janet Braun. Carol was born in Cincinnati with a serious birth defect that led to the early amputation of her left arm. Despite this, Carol lived her life as if she had no limitations, excelling in both athletics and academics. A 1975 graduate of Finneytown High School in Cincinnati, Carol was a varsity athlete in softball, basketball and tennis (earning MVP honors) and a member of the National Honor Society. She was included in a 1970 issue of Sports Illustrated for her softball prowess. Carol graduated cum laude from The Ohio State University, College of Pharmacy in 1980 where she was elected to the Rho Chi academic honor society and Mortar Board, a national scholastic and activities honorary organization. She graduated from The Ohio State University College of Medicine in 1984 and completed her residency in internal medicine at The Ohio State University Medical Center. After her residency, Carol worked at the US Food and Drug Administration in Rockville, Maryland, as one of the first Medical Officers approving new drugs for HIV/AIDS. While at the FDA, Carol also completed fellowship training in Clinical Pharmacology at Georgetown University, where she served as an Assistant Professor. After 11 years at the FDA, Dr. Braun worked in the pharmaceutical industry for AkaRx, Inc. and GloboMax LLC, later ICON Development Solutions. In 2008, she co-founded SAJE Consulting LLC, a pharmaceutical consulting firm, with her colleague Dr. Helen Pentikis, and also served as Chief Medical Officer of Symbiomix. Dr. Braun served as Vice President and member of the Board of Directors of the American Society of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics, and was recognized as an expert in early phase drug development. Carol was inducted into the Finneytown Local Schools Hall of Fame, and received the Distinguished Alumni Award from The Ohio State University College of Pharmacy. Carol was active at St. Bartholomew's Epsicopal Church in Baltimore, and supported many feminist causes throughout her life. She was an enthusiastic supporter of Ohio State athletics, in addition to local athletic teams, and an avid world traveler. A Celebration and Memorial Service will be held on Wednesday, April 27 at 11:00 am at St. Bartholomew's Epsicopal Church in Baltimore, and she requested that everyone wear bright colors. In lieu of flowers, gifts in memory of Dr. Carol Braun may be directed to St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church, 4711 Edmonson Avenue, Baltimore, MD 21229-1440, or to The Sarcoma Fund, Dr. Christian Meyer, at the Johns Hopkins Kimmel Cancer Center, P.O. I was a good friend of Carol's during our Pre-Pharmacy college days at University of Cincinnati. She inspired me to excel, encouraging me to join Honor Societies and Rho Chi. Although we lost touch after she moved to Columbus, I will always remember her as a very strong woman, determined to succeed in spite of her obstacles. The world has lost an outstanding Pharmacist and Physician.

Carol was an amazing woman that showed strength of character and wit in all she accomplished. We were so lucky to have her in our St. John's family. My fondest memories include Synchronized Swimming in the Shrine Mont pool. The temperature was 80 and the water was about 40. We laughed till we almost drowned. John suggested I wear the "bathing suit t-shirt" to the funeral. I thought it a bit much, but it was one of her favorites. God Bless.

Carol was a beautiful woman filling with incredible love for her family, friends, church and God. She glowed with her infinite love, and everyone could see it and feel it. Her St Johns family was so thrilled when she and Charles asked to be married at our annual retreat at Shrine Mont. It is a special place, made even more special by Carol and Charles' desire to gather both their closest families from both home and church to witness their union under God. She wanted us all to feel her love in such meaningful ways. We still see her smile. We still feel her love.

My husband and I knew Carol from dog walking in our neighborhood. She was always a delight to run into with her 2 little dogs, one who ultimately was on 3 legs after an amputation. She always was friendly and interesting to talk with. She will be missed, and we send our deepest sympathy to her family.

I knew Carol in her younger years. I babysat her and her sisters and watched her as she grew through the years. I mostly remember her in the Girl Scout troop that her mother, Dottie, lead. She was an amazing young girl and grew into a more amazing young woman.
I have very fond memories of her and she will be missed but never forgotten.
