Charles CHALK Obituary

CHALK

Charles (Carl) W. Chalk, 88 of Bellevue and Ft. Thomas departed this world for the next on Thursday, January 9, 2014. He is survived by his daughter, Maria, and his son Steff who cherished and recognized him as a rock of stability in shaping their lives. He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 63 years, Mildred (Dots) Steffen who is certain to be welcoming him. Carl retired Cincinnati Bell (Cincinnati Suburban Bell) as a System Engineer after-which he became an avid golfer, traveler and gardener. He remained a presence with his family and community by expressing a warmth and humor that characterized his life. Carl chose to enlist in the United States Navy at age 17. His Naval Airman training took him to Hollywood and Miami, FL, Reno NV, and San Diego, CA - where he was assigned to the USS Bennington, CV20, with Torpedo Squadron One during the latter stages of WWII. His service in the US Navy included missions to Tokyo Bay, the Inland Sea of Japan and other locations of the Pacific Theatre. On August 15, 1945 he was on what was to be his final combat mission, en route to Tokyo, when Admiral Nimitz notified all airborne craft to "drop their bombs in the ocean and return to base - the war was over." Post combat missions his squadron flew non-combat supply missions to Americans and allies interned in POW facilities throughout the Pacific. In November of 2001 he was inducted into the Naval Aircrew Roll of Honor for meritorious service where his plaque hangs currently at the U.S. Naval and Maritime Museum in Charleston Harbor, South Carolina. Later in life Carl was a member of the Elks, the Bellboys Golf Club and served as President St. Thomas Boosters. Carl remained active with family friends and travel until January, 9, 2014. Visitation 3-6 p.m., Sunday, January 19th at Dobbling Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Mass of Christian Burial 10 a.m., Monday, January 20th at St. Thomas Church, Ft. Thomas with the burial to follow at St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Memorials may be made in the form of masses. Online condolences can be given at dmefuneral.com. Life has been changed, but not taken away.
