Dr. Don R. Stephens, age 79, East Pike Street, Cynthiana, died Monday, August 5, 2013, at the University of Kentucky Chandler Medical Center in Lexington. He was born August 28, 1933 in Williamsburg, Kentucky to the late Albert and Stella Prewitt Stephens. Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Clarence Albert Stephens and a sister, Jean Stephens. He is survived by his wife, Sonia Stephens; three sons, Don (Kathryn) Stephens, Louisville and Doug Stephens and Dennis Stephens, both of Cynthiana; two daughters, Jane Stephens, Cincinnati, Ohio and Susan Stephens (Michael) Grieff, Liberty Township, Ohio; a brother, Hobert Stephens, Kissimmee, Florida; a sister, Sue Stephens (Jim) Jones, Cincinnati, Ohio; nine grandchildren, Jarrod Douglas, Jacob Donald, Joanna Duncan Stephens, Donald Ray Stephens, III, Henry Mercer Stephens, William Patrick Stephens, Joshua Dennis Stephens, Abigail Mackenzie Grieff and Madeline Elizabeth Grieff and two great grandchildren, Kaylee Brook Mirabito and Payton Stephens. Returning from service in Vietnam, Dr. Stephens reestablished his practice and celebrated his 50 year anniversary in 2011. He was grandfathered into the charter membership of the specialty of Family Medicine in 1970. He practiced medicine, surgery and obstetrics in his Family Medicine practice. He delivered many babies during his time in practice. Apart from Dr. Stephens' dedication to his medical practice and his family, he was deeply involved in organized medicine. He was a member of the Academy of Family Physicians, of the Kentucky Medical Association and of the American Medical Association. He was longtime chair of the Rural Kentucky Medical Scholarship Fund (RKMSF) which provides loans and grants to medical students who agree to practice medicine in underserved rural areas of Kentucky. He also served as chairman of the KMA Board of Trustees and as KMA President 1998-1999. He was an Alternate Delegate to the American Medical Association. Dr. Stephens' life was marked by dedication and service to his patients, to his practice and to organized medicine. The school system and community at large benefitted from his 31 years of dedicated service on the Harrison County Board of Education. He was an elder of the Covenant Presbyterian Church for 42 years. Dr. Stephens served in the 7th Armored Calvary Medical Hospital and Womack Army Medical Center in Fort Bragg, North Carolina. A memorial service will be held 5:00 P.M. Lost a great man in my life today. Dr. Stephens, the man that brought me into this world and helped me fight to stay in it. He came into this world and left it a better place I like to believe with all the love and sacrifices on his part. He seemed to always be smiling no matter the news he was bringing you and he always gave you a sense of safety and well keeping with his soft spoken but confident voice. Every sticker, dum dum sucker, and ever time he made sure the "play room" was available every time I came showed that he truly cared for his patients. You will be greatly missed Doctor Stephens! Give Lacy a bone and kiss her on the head, give my papaw a hug and my uncle Ronnie a playful elbow. I miss you and hope I made you proud cause I couldn't be the man I am today without meeting the man you were. With deepest respect and sympathy to his wife, children and grandchildren.

I was sorry to hear of Don's death. I grew up in Williamsburg and knew him
as Donnie (as my father used to call him) when he worked in my father's store as a clerk during the time he
was going to school. My father was really fond of him and he was like
part of the family. He was so proud of
him when he graduated from Medical School. The entire Levin family wish
to extend our deepest sympathy to his
family, as I know he will be missed by
them and his many friends and patients.James Levin

Dr. Stephens was the greatest man I have ever known. He was always there when I needed him as a doctor and a friend. I admired him and loved him and words can not express how much I will miss him and our talks. He saved my daughter's life when she had a rare staff infection, saved my marriage when my husband had a stroke, by reminding me marriage was through sickness and health. I drove my kids and myself 45 minutes one way so he would take care of them. Words can not express what has been lost by his passing. He can not be replaced. My prayers go out to his family and the community. Dr. Stephens you are loved and will be missed. Thank you for what you have done for me over the years and for my family. I shall not forget you.

Don, or Donnie as we called him in Williamsburg, meant so much to so many people, as indicated in the messages here. He and I were the same age in Williamsburg, and went to school together. The last time I saw him was at our high school reunion a few years ago - class of '52. It is special that he and his family lived in Cynthiana and Harrison County where my father's family lived. I send sincere condolences to his family.

So sorry to hear about Dr. Stephens passing. My name is John Stephen Anderson. I go by Steve, short for Stephen, always have. I've been told my middle name was chosen in honor of Dr.Stephens because I might not be here today if it weren't for his tireless efforts! I was born a twin at only 3 1/4 pounds, premature. As the story goes, there were apparently complications and Dr. Stephens moved into our hospital room to make sure my twin sister and I would get through and survive! I'm not sure for how long he had to do so, but I am grateful! Thank you for giving me and my sister a chance in life! My twin, Candy Anderson-Catron ironically passed a way just a few days before Dr. Stephens! I hope they run into one another on the other side! I'm sure Candy will thank him personally! Condolences and God Bless the family of Dr. Stephens during such a sadden time! I hope you find this story uplifting!
