Dr. Garland Glenwood Parker

PARKER Dr. Garland Glenwood Parker, 87, of Poinciana, Florida, died Saturday, February 15, 2003, in Kissimmee, Florida. Born July 12, 1915, in Kennett, Missouri, to Clarence and Onie Stanley Parker, he graduated from Kennett High School and earned his Bachelor of Science in Education from Southeast Missouri State University in 1937 and married Elizabeth Smith, the love of his life. He later earned his Master of Philosophy and Ph. D. in History and Political Science from The University of Wisconsin. He also studied at Tulane University in New Orleans. He was Professor Emeritus of History and Educational Research, having retired from the University of Cincinnati in 1980 as Vice Provost for Admissions and Records and Executive Director of Enrollment Policy & Educational Research. He formerly taught high school in Jackson, MO, Sikeston, MO, and The Newman School in New Orleans. Listed in Who's Who in America, he was the author of over 100 scholarly pubications including annual reports on American collegiate enrollments and books on the Middle East, where he and Elizabeth lived while he conducted studies of the educational systems in Jordan, Syria and Iraq. He served as President of the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers and the Ohio Association of Collegiate Registrars. An active member of First United Methodist Church, Kissimmee, he and Elizabeth were co-founders of the Parker-Genesis Sunday School Class. He was formerly active in Westwood United Methodist Church and Mt. Auburn Baptist Church in Cincinnati and Baptist churches in Kennett, Cape Girardeau, Jackson, and Sikeston, MO, and St. Charles Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans. He was a member of the American College Testing Program (ACT) Board of Trustees and an ACT Ohio State Representative. He served on the Board of Northern Baptist Seminary Trustees and the Boards of Directors of the YMCA and Deaconess Hospital in Cincinnati. He was a member f Sigma Phi Epsilon Fraternity, Chairman of National Sigma Phi Epsilon Scholarship Committee, and was recipient of the University of Wisconsin European History Fellowship, Southeast Missouri State University Alumni Merit Award, Sigma Phi Epsilon Career Achievement Award, Sigma Phi Epsilon Order of the Golden Heart, and the Garland G. Parker Achievement Award, Ohio Association of College Registrars. Dr. Parker was preceded in death by daughter Hope Parker Heiob, brothers Allen Parker and Norman Parker. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Elizabeth Smith Parker of Poinciana, daughter Anne Garland Parker Colter and son-in-law Edward J. Colter of Houston, TX; sister-in-law Hope Smith Daugherty of Poinciana, nieces Elizabeth Daugherty Woods and Lynn Daugherty Shrewsbury, both of St. Louis, MO; nephew Dr. Brett Parker of Stony Brook, NY; three grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. Visitation for family and friends will be 7-9 P.M. Friday and 10 A.M.-12 Noon Saturday. Funeral services wll be held 12 Noon Saturday, February 22, 2003 at Grissom Funeral Home, 803 W. Emmett St., Kissimmee, FL. Interment will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park, Orlando, FL.
