L-R: Puppeteers Wayne Martin & Larry Smith with Larry's Hattie the Witch
Wayne Martin
March 10, 2018
Creator of Teaser the Mouse, Rudy the Rooster, Buzzy the Bear, Mean Old Cat, Snarfie R. Dog, Nasty Ole Thing and of course Hattie the Witch. These are just some of the over 300 characters Larry created during his 55 year career.
Also of note, his 1962 syndicated, critically acclaimed, 40 episode prime-time puppet series for adults the Contemporaries! A puppet TV series for adults, a full decade and a half before The Muppet Show.
During his 55-year career Larry racked up an estimated 6,319 hours of LIVE television. That's LIVE television. No tape, no edits in post, no re-dos, but LIVE!
And these 6,319 hours do not include his countless TV commercials, guest appearances and specials, including The Littlest Snowman,' Once Upon A Broomstick' and Granny Snowflakes Christmas Surprise' to name but only a few.
Then there was his community service and volunteer work. The best known of which were his years of work for Muscular Dystrophy Association of America, helping to raise hundreds of thousands of dollars and introducing Carnivals For Muscular Dystrophy to the Tri-State area. For years he also volunteered weekly at area MDAA children softball games and acted as chaperone for numerous regional and national trips for children living with MD.
I first saw Larry on TV when I was three and met him when I was four. He was my idol, my mentor and my friend. Apart from my mom and dad there is no one who was a bigger influence on my life. While life will never be the same without him, it has been so much richer and happier for having him been a part of it.
I thank him for all of the crazy, crazy times we shared and I will miss him for the rest of my days.

Larry was my first true love -- at OSU. I will always remember his charm, his fun-loving personality, and his wicked sense of humor. Go in peace, dear friend.

Thank you, Mr. Smith. Thank you for the laughter. Thank you for the inspiration, and thank you for my childhood. Also, thank you for cheering up that crying 4 year old boy at Coney Island many years ago by talking to him as Snarfie. That little boy will never forget you and will be forever grateful!

It wasn't too long ago that I saw old black and white footage from Coo Coo Fran and Ollie on PBS and said OMG that was Hattie the Witch! I had no idea it Larry had taken his art national. I have only fond memories of his show during my childhood years. You live forever in the memories of others.

I remember Larry's earliest TV shows, and his visit to my grade school, when I was a kid in Cincinnati. Thanks for the memories.

To the family and friends of Mr. Larry Smith,
"We wanted to say to you how special Mr. Smith was to us. Remember watching his show when we were children. Met him during Westwood Community events, where he often volunteered his services. May Our Lord look over you. May the Holy Spirit provide you with His guidance. May Our Mother Mary wrap Her arms around you. God's blessings are sent your way. There is another angel in Heaven!"
