Mattie DOUGHMAN Obituary

DOUGHMAN

Mattie M., age 95, of Montgomery, Ohio, passed away Wednesday March 4, 2015. Widow of Harry L. Doughman Jr. Survivors include her children, Judy (deceased 2013)/Richard; Barbara; Jerry (Jill); David(Paula); Marie; Dale (aka Sam)/(Leslie); 14 grandchildren and 15 great grandchildren, all of whom she loved. She was born in North Carolina, Mattie graduated from high school at age 16. She sought work and bought a house for her mother at age 20. Mattie's search for work took her to Oak Ridge, TN, where she met and married Harry. Judy, her eldest child was born while Harry was in Occupied Japan during WW II. Mattie had her children in rapid succession, six in 9 years, and was widowed at age 40. She never remarried. Her life was that of homemaker and church member. Beloved by all, intellectually curious, and witty, she opened her home to her children's friends and took many on family trips to visit grandparents in Florida. She loved playing games, especially beating her children at them! Her beautiful smile, and flashing blue eyes endeared her to strangers. While hospitalized and in need of a blood transfusion, she quipped to her nurse, "royal" blood only! Mattie's life was a "royal" class act, and she made a loving impact on all of us. Life within the church was a great part of her life. She was a founding member of Church of the Savior United Methodist Church 8005 Pfeiffer Rd Montgomery, OH 45242 where visitation will be on Saturday March 14th at 9:00am until the funeral at 10:00am at the church. Memorials suggested to American Cancer Society. Guestbook online at www.strawserfuneralhome.com

Dear Cousin Mattie;
You will always be the epitome of 'a lady' to me. As Harry Doughman's daughter-in-law, Mother of six amazing children, you are among the few who remembered me as a child. I'll treasure your memory. I enjoyed doing 'family history' with you and Judy. Hope to see you both in 'the Sweet by and by'.

So sorry to hear of the passing of dear Mattie. As a kid growing up and in high school, she was always welcoming and treated me as one of her own. I will always remember her for her kindness and loving attitude. My heart felt love to all.

I was so sorry to learn of your mom's passing. My dad gave me the news today. I so enjoyed chatting with your mom when I was secretary there at Church of the Saviour. She would stop by and visit with me after she attended the Esther Laird Circle meetings. We would reminisce about the good ole days living on Zig Zag Road and about us kids going to Sycamore. It was a sad day when she stopped coming to church for the Circle meetings and church services. She was a great lady and will be sorely missed by all. Now she's back home with your dad. God bless you all. Nancy Pohl Skirvin
