Michael Mannerino Obituary

Whenever a customer walked into Michael L. Mannerino Jr.'s store, they knew they'd get good service. He would greet his customers personally, ask about their families, then help them select the perfect piece of music.

Mr. Mannerino's warm personality and expertise kept people coming back to Mannerino's Sheet Music in Mount Healthy.

"You were a friend, not just a customer," said H. Jane Gavin of Clifton Heights, a longtime friend.

Mr. Mannerino of Mason owned and ran the sheet music shop for 39 years before closing it in 2009, partly due to health reasons. He died Aug. 6 of cancer. He was 75.

Before opening shop, he taught music for 12 years in the Forest Hills School District. He also judged high school music competitions throughout Ohio and Indiana, raised five children and cooked a mean Italian sauce for spaghetti dinner fundraisers.

Mr. Mannerino grew up in Beaver Falls, Pa. He attended Carnegie Mellon University, then transferred to what was then known as the Conservatory of Music in Cincinnati, where he graduated in 1957 with a bachelor's in music education.

He earned his master's in education from Xavier University in 1961 and taught instrumental music at Anderson High School before opening his store. His principal instrument was clarinet.

Mr. Mannerino had a warm sense of humor, recalled Gavin, who started her own career as a student teacher under Mr. Mannerino at Anderson.

"He was able to communicate so well with children," said his wife, Sandra L. Johnson-Mannerino.

A short man with glasses, he never tried to command a room with his presence, she said.

"He let other people have the floor," she said.

He was quiet and understated - something that helped people relate to him, including the students.

In addition to being a music educator and business owner, Mr. Mannerino was also a clinician and adjudicator for instrumental music contests for Ohio, Indiana and Kentucky.

"He knew his craft so well that a number of directors would come to him when he was displaying music at the OMEA and KMEA contests. When he was in hospice they came and thanked him for his service and for helping them improve their skills in music direction and how to relate to the students."

Mr. Mannerino lived most of his life in Anderson Township and raised five children there with his first wife, the late Rose Mary Mannerino.

Mr. Mannerino would talk about selling sheet music to directors out of the trunk of his car in the early years of the sheet music business. He quickly found that he'd tapped an unmet need in this region.

He eventually opened Mannerino Sheet Music in a permanent location. His relationships and friendships with music directors throughout the region helped boost his business.

Mr. Mannerino's relationships, expertise and reputation for quality service helped make his shop one of the few family businesses in the region to survive after sheet music became readily available on the Internet, his wife said.

He required his employees to have music degrees.

One of those employees was his future wife. Sandra Johnson had a doctorate degree in musicology. Soon after he hired her in 2002, however, Mr. Mannerino, a widower, set his sights on making her his wife.

The couple married in 2005 and moved to Mason.

In addition to his wife, survivors include two daughters, Phyllis Green of Port St. Lucia, Fla., and Anna Marie Himebaugh of Cincinnati; three sons, Michael L. Mannerino, David Mannerino, and Mark Mannerino, all of Cincinnati ; a stepson, David A. Karsnia of Minnesota; two sisters, Jo Ann McDanel of Pennsylvania and Frances Pascotto, of Torrance, Calif.; four grandchildren; and two step grandchildren.

Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. Saturday at Annunciation Church in Clifton, 3547 Clifton Ave., Clifton, followed by a Memorial Mass of Christian Burial at 10:30.

Memorials: Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center P.O. Box 5202 Cincinnati, OH 45201; or Hospice of Cincinnati, P.O. Box 633597, Cincinnati OH 45263.

Mr. Mannerino was my fondest memory in high school. He was my band director from 1967-1969. He was a kind and patient man and let me know I was an important part of his band and marching band. I loved Mr. Mannerino and was heartily sorry when he left teaching. I never thanked him for what he taught me as a student and the example he provided us all by being a truly good man. God bless you and remain at peace.

Mr. Mannerino was my band director from elementary until his last year of teaching in 1969.
He encouraged me to practice going from last chair to first. Little did he know I played professional trumpet for over 30 years. Big influence in my life !

I am so sorry to hear of Mr. Mannerino's passing. He was such a great inspiration to me as my band director. His name is one of the few names that come to mind when I think of my days at Anderson High School. He was not only the band director but also a great influence on many young lives.

I'm so sorry to hear of Mike's passing. He was such an important mentor to me as he taught me nearly everything I know about instrumental music. I had the privilege of working at the store with him and various members of his family for over 10 years. He will always have a special place in my heart. My thoughts and prayers are with the Mannerino family during this difficult time.

I remember, with tremendous awe and reverence as a high school flutist, Mr. Mannerino guest conducting one of our evening concert band practices in order to critique and lend suggestions. He was kind, but forceful in his comments, and you knew that music was his love. My heartfelt condolences to his family...

It was with great sadness that I heard of Mike's passing. He was always so helpful to me from my years as a student and later as an educator. Mike always greeted me with a smile and made me feel welcome. He was an amazing man with a huge heart and will be missed.

Reading everyone's memory, makes you want to sit at a piano ago, pick up that instrument and play again! But sadly, there is no Mannerino's to go to get new music and for someone to help you get what you need. The day the store closed was hard enough, but then losing someone who spent as much time with someone buying a Thompson First Grade book as someone buying a piece for CCM- made him one special man.

So sorry to hear of Mike's passing. I bought piano and vocal music from his store for 31 years and really miss it. Nothing in the area compares to Mannerino's selection and service. Buying online just isn't as satisfying as being able to peruse the scores in the store.

Mike was a school-mate from Beaver Falls high school. We were in band together there and also at the Conservatory of Music. A good man he was: just never play poker with him.

As a student at Mount Healthy, I remember using Mannerino's to get music for contests and even popular music that I could learn how to play on my saxophone. Thank you, Lord, for sharing him with us for a brief time. -- Daniel Johnson, Jr., Mount Healthy High School, class of 1988

How many of us bought our competition music from Mannerino's? And how many of us sang part of it to be told- no- try another by Mike? I have to thank him for my HS success and for me being accepted to CCM with those marks. It was a special place. Lisa Greeen

I was shocked and saddened to hear of Mike's passing. I was a faithful customer from my earliest teaching job until the store closed (itself a sad moment for us music teachers). From my first days Mike was such a help with selecting music, giving advice, or just lending an ear. And as the years went by we'd be more likely to talk about his golf game or the grandkids than music. He was truly a gentleman and I will always remember him fondly.

I owe a great deal of my success in teaching to him. He always gave a shoulder to lean on in the tough times and was always a source of encouragement. I will miss him!

We're so sorry to hear of Mike's passing. We often speak of Mike and the store quite fondly, and very much have missed both since the closing. Mike was not only a wonderful musician and businessman, he was a kind, gentle and warm soul that greeted us each time with a hug and a smile, treating us to lunch from time to time when we were there, and always engaging in conversation and a story to reminisce about something to make us both laugh. He loved his customers, and it was a great loss to the music community when the store closed, but a much greater loss upon his passing of a wonderful family man and friend. Our hearts go out to his family--please know that we all think of you, and Mike, often and fondly, and are quite sure he's in Heaven with Wayne and Lenore Wilkinson talking about music and enjoy a great conversation!

I am so saddened to learn of Mike's passing. Having been both a collegue and customer of his for over 40 years, I can think of no other person whose friendship and advice I valued more. Just such a good guy and educator in every sense of the words. He truly made our profession better and we are at a loss because of his passing.

Mr. Mannerino was my clarinet teacher from the day I started out in the 5th grade through my senior year in 1966. Band was always the highlight of my school day. He was truly one of the people in your life that you always remember. He was devoted to his students at Anderson and I have many fond memories. And, perhaps it is in his memory that I have had a renewal of my clarinet playing at age 62. God bless you, Mr. Mannerino.

Mike Mannerino was my band director in grade school, jr hi school and high school in the Forest Hills School District from 1955-1963.
He cared so much for his students musically as well as personally. As a band director myself from 1967 to the present, I probably chatted with Mike at least once a week at his music store in Mt. Healthy. I will truly miss him as a businessman, a teacher and a friend.
