Sue Franz messaged us to tell us the sad news of Dick's passing. I had tried to find all of you on Facebook some time ago and I am saddened to send you messages of sympathy and support. We loved all of you and miss you. I read that little ones have joined you and I know they made Dick proud. Sending sincere sympathy to Patty. It breaks our hearts to read that she must make her way without the love of her life. We will be holding all of you in our hearts and sending prayers . Grace, Henry and Helene

Grew up in point place with Dick attending both st.johns grade school & then st.francis high school together. Fond memories of sleep overs at his childhood home behind foodtown. Lots of fun with friends like Steve & Phil Suttons, Soviar, Tim Obrien, Skip Point,Bobby Lawrence, just doing kid things growing up with good family values your parents & sister Corky were always a great part of the community.

I am so sad to hear of Dick’s passing. I knew him at P&G but really got to know him well at BiOWiSH. Dick was a caring person who always had a smile on his face. He was also a subject matter expert in many areas and always eloquent in expressing his thoughts. After I left BiOWiSH he sought me out to personally reconnect. Even though he was my co-worker, I considered him my friend. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family who I know he loved and cherished. RIP Dick

We were shocked by the sad news. We so dearly remember our time with Dick and Patty in China. Dick was always ready to help the people around him even if that meant challenging the set ways things were typically being done. What mattered most to him was caring for the person. We will miss him dearly and hope Patty and the children can find strength from the fond memories they have. Our thoughts are with them.

Patty and family,
So sorry to hear of Dick's passing. I graduated with "Carp", as we all called him at St. Francis. I don't believe I had seen him since college at UT. I had heard many stories about his success in his career and it did not surprise me. He was so brilliant in the sciences and had a passion for it. The thing I remember most about him though is his sense of humor and his contagious laugh! One thing I do remember him doing in chemistry class was asking Father Ebinhoe if we could make some LSD. He was obviously joking, but Father said sure if he could get the formula, playing right along. . Back then that would have been a Herculean task with no internet etc. But it certainly brought a laugh in class.
I also remember his wedding day and the pure joy he expressed in getting married to Patty. I'm sure he continued to adore her all through the rest of his life as well as his children and grand children.
The world is a better place because of his presence.

I was sad to hear about his passing. I had the honor of working at White Stone and I know how much he and Nan supported and believed in the work we were able to do. I am forever grateful for my time at White Stone and getting to work alongside the Carpenter family. I thank God for the Carpenter family and specifically want to honor Dick and Nan for the ways they encouraged, loved, and supported the staff and the mission. That season changed my life for the better and God brought beauty and growth from it. So thank you for all that you did and for the difference you made in my life and countless others I’m sure. Prayers for God’s peace, comfort, love, and the sweet memories to bring comfort for the Carpenter family and friends. May God bless and keep you.

It has taken me some time to find the words. Dickie, my cousin, will be missed and forever in our hearts. He was always full of energy, thinking, curious, and having fun with life. There were the days of his band playing in the garage, which I thought was so cool. There were always laughs and fun when he was around, loved the quick wit. I choose to post his wedding picture because I remember how happy Dick was when he met Patty. He took on a new glow that seemed to grow with having his kids and grandkids. You just saw it. There is always that moment of darkness when a light so bright goes out in our world, but the love he gave still grows and so will that light again.

Dick was my closest colleague, friend and mentor as I navigated my first relocation from Canada to the US in 1989, patiently explaining the in-and-outs of P&G's operations in its global headquarters. We worked hard, we played hard and travelled together frequently. Dick's brilliance, humanity, utter joy in his family and constant support for his teams was ever-evident, as was his sense of fun and willingness to engage in occasional, harmless mischief.
Time and career led us down different paths and locations, but we shared frequent happy reconnections and remembrances whenever possible, even after our 'first' retirements. I'll be forever grateful for Dick's friendship, thoughtfulness and never-ending laughing smile.
Sincerest condolences to Dick's family as they grieve this loss -- and thank you for sharing him so generously. RIP, dear Dick.

I was Dick's first hire at BiOWiSH. He had met me at U of I where I did an experiment on odor control with their product in pigs. Wish I had a camera that day. Dick in a Tyvek suit on a pig farm.....priceless!!! He later told me that when he got back on the plane, everyone around him was looking at him funny because of the pig odors! Too funny.
He was the best part of working at BiOWiSH. He mentored me daily. I would ask him all kinds of questions and he was never too busy or never acted like any question I had was stupid. He would always tell me, "Jody, there are no stupid questions, only stupid answers." We were partners and friends. He encouraged me to express my ideas and always listened. Whenever he had to address any issues with me, I never felt like I was being criticized. He knew people, he knew how to listen to them and how to talk with them on their level.
In the photo, I was helping him get ready for a trip overseas for work and our international team requested BiOWiSH gear be brought over. Dick never liked checking a bag for these trips, so he was trying to figure out how he was going to get all these hats on the plane. We thought maybe he could wear them?
On a personal note, he and Patty treated me like family. He worried about me when I was traveling internationally for the company. I would check in daily and if I didn't he would be reaching out to make sure I was okay. I was very blessed to be a part of their "extended" family. My 10 years of working with Dick was by far the best years with him as my boss. I wouldn't be who I am today without his influence. Thank you Dick for all you've done. I'll miss you. Jody

I was extremely fortunate to become a good friend with Dick when he came to visit us at BioSource. He was extremely passionate about his work and he wanted to learn every aspect of Microbiology , though he was a chemist. We have travelled together a few times and we have had several meetings and phone conversations . He loved Spicy Indian Food and he always wanted to eat and enjoy good food. He was always very friendly , jovial and extremely caring about everybody. We spoke about 45 days back , but I had no idea about his health. Due to Covid , we had not met in more than one year. He always spoke highly about his wife and children. A great friend , great human being , a great scientist , I will miss him dearly. - Suresh

Dick is my cousin, brother to cousin Corrine, nephew to my now dearly-departed Mom and Dad, Carmen and Joe Claus, and son to my beloved Aunt and Uncle, Dick and Mary Jane Carpenter, who have also passed. Our family times together were often while we were growing up - holidays, birthdays, weekend picnics, and many, many gatherings at the home of Aunt Mary and Uncle Dick. Everyone lived within a relatively short distance. Dickie, as we called him then, grew up in a large, vibrant, welcoming, and loving family environment, never short on joy and laughter. As I read the entries from his former co-workers, it is apparent that this loving, nurturing environment produced a beautiful man whose generous, caring, and fruitful legacy will live on far and wide, as well as in our hearts. Until we meet again, Cousin, much love forever.

Dick came into my life during his second career, working for BioWish Technologies. He took us all at Cal Poly on a rollicking journey along with him as he tried to bring the power of microbes to the world. It was a joy to work with him and through all the hiccups and bumps in the road though out our collaborations he maintained a beautiful poise and grace that I only wish I could emulate in my own life. As I expressed to him a little while ago, he may never know it, but he had an outsize influence on an army of students at Cal Poly, many of whom translated their experience with projects for BioWish into a lifelong dedication and joy for science and engineering. So, to echo Mike Showell, Dick's energy also lives on in those he touched throughout his life. His joy for discovery and innovation ripple on out across the ocean of humanity.
I can still see your smile Dick.

I am so sorry to hear of Dick's passing. I was privileged to work with him for several years at P&G. He was a passionate leader of technology development and a world-class scientist. He had a natural affinity for organization development, leading the Beijing Technical Center and Analytical organization among many others. But most of all, he was a true servant leader and was so instrumental in the development of many scientists and technologists. Deepest condolences to his family and to his friends and colleagues around the world.

Dick was my boss from 2017 to 2019. He was one of the best people I have known. He was kind, considerate, patient, and joyful, even during difficult times. He cared about individuals. He was very intelligent, tireless, and as a scientist, he loved to learn new things. He always gave credit and recognition to others. He was encouraging and uplifting. His wife, children, grandchildren and people in general were the most important thing to him. He did not allow worldliness and the world blind him and not care for people. He was a saint, yes a saint. The world lost a great man, and I lost a friend and a brother in the Lord. Dear Patty, I pray for all of you.

I have known Dick for 40+ years. He was a great friend and colleague. He had an infectious smile, was kind and cared for his people while excelling at technology development and management to address consumer needs globally.
After retirement he joined BiOWiSH, a startup I chaired as CTO. He took a concept and translated into a viable and scalable product at target costs to improve agricultural outcomes. That has broad recognition in global markets As a result we are making a huge impact in agricultural and aquacultural sustainability destined to turn BiOWiSH into a leader in the use of biological compositions to help the human race. Dick’s legacy will revolutionize an industry that has been stagnant for decades.
I will miss him dearly. May he rest in eternal peace. Billie and I extend our heartfelt sympathy to Patty and the family hoping you all have strength during this time of loss.

It was with great sadness I learned about Dick's passing. I worked with Dick for many years including a close partnership when we worked together at P&G's Beijing Innovation Center. Condolences to Patty and the Carpenter family; may peace with you as you grieve his loss.

As a co-grandparent to Ivy I have always felt as family to yours. As Ivy and I did homeschool together, one of our subjects was Bible and prayer time. I can say without a doubt, whenever we ended our Bible study we took our time and prayed from our heart for Pa. Many tears were shed (and still are) as we journeyed with Pa in prayer for all his needs, always listening to Holy Spirit to guide our prayers. Ivy was his prayer warrior, leading him safely home.
She was SO happy to hear as she snuggled with him, say "Ivy is my best medicine."
All my love to Pa, Patty and his dear family. We will see you again.

There’s an essay by Aaron Freeman about why you want a physicist to speak at your funeral. In it, Freeman makes the point that we are all made of energy and in this universe energy is conserved. So, even though a loved one may not be physically with us any longer their energy is still with us. In his concluding sentence he writes “According to the law of the conservation of energy, not a bit of you is gone; you're just less orderly”. I find that sentiment comforting.
Dick was my mentor, my role model, but most importantly my friend. I met Dick in December of 1984 when I joined Procter & Gamble as a new hire. Dick was my training supervisor. His job was to make sure I successfully integrated into the P&G culture. A huge challenge to be sure and I am so very thankful that I had him as an early mentor. Whatever success I enjoyed at P&G is in no small part due to his guidance and influence.
Dick and I shared an office for several years and worked together on multiple projects throughout our careers at P&G. Upon my retirement in 2012, I had the great good fortune to link up again with Dick to help develop the R&D program for BiOWiSH Technologies.
Our jobs at P&G and BiOWiSH involved significant travel. Dick and I spent considerable time visiting and collaborating with colleagues in Europe, Asia, North and South America. When ever we got together socially it was inevitable that we would reminisce about some of our more memorable travel exploits. Often to the chagrin of our spouses who have suffered those stories way to often.
There is no question that Dick was technically strong. He read extensively and kept up on current technologies and scientific breakthroughs. I remember a meeting with a professor from OSU where, after an in-depth discussion on plant genetics, the professor said “Dick you could teach my plant sciences class.”
But, Dicks real strengths, as I think all of us who knew and worked with him know, and what I valued most, were his interpersonal skills. He could talk to anybody, ask intelligent, thoughtful questions, and really engage in a way that made people feel listened to and valued. Dicks compassion, empathy, and steadfastness made people want to work for him. He was loyal to his colleagues and employees, never giving up on people even when some thought he should.
It’s a common mistake that we don’t take the time to tell people in our lives how much they mean to us. I feel so blessed that in our last conversation together I had the opportunity to tell Dick that I loved him and how fortunate Karen and I were to have him and Patty in our lives.
We will miss him, but his energy will stay with us forever.
